Are you using the original cable? (Power cables, like the ones that come with wireless headsets, won't work.) Have you told Kies to install the drivers (in the Tools menu).
Are you connecting the phone to the computer, not to a USB hub?
If all the answers are yes, you probably have a defective cable, a defective port on the phone or a defective port on the computer.
