Root How to switch between ROM's

Sorry if this has been asked before but I've searched and couldn't find the answer I was looking for. I rooted with Smoked Glass and I wanted to upgrade to Smoked Glass v4.5. What I was wanting is should I delete the Original Smoked Glass and then put 4.5 on there could I just go ahead and put 4.5 on it?

With ROMs that close in nature, unless the dev specifically say don't update, you should be able to update just fine.

However, I always start from scratch - that is one less headache I have to worry about if all of a sudden my apps start giving the new ROM fits (or vice versa).

Ok thats what I was wanting to do anyways so I went to restore my Nandroid backup of my stock and I keep getting Error: Nandroid exited with status 21. So I'm confused on why I keep getting this error.

Check your folder and make sure there is stuff there - and verify the name of the folder too.

Yeah I checked the folders and there was stuff in the folders.

What would be the correct name for the folder? I checked my nandroid folder and everything seemed to be right including the name. The name of my backup is RetailBackup022610.

And inside the folder are 4 files?

No, there are 7 files: boot, cache, data, misc, nandroid.md5, recovery, and system. Cache, data, and system all look like a stack of books in their icons.

Their .tar files, similar to RAR in that they are archives, but a much older format. Your computer is set to have WinRAR open .tar files, hence the icon, b/c that is the default WinRAR icon for .RAR / .tar archives.

OK, so the name 8and* the number of files indicate that this is a backup of sorts, not a different ROM - where did you get this, or is this your own backup?

it it ain't your own, and you don't implicitly trust the person you got it from (as in with your life) then I highly suggest that you not install it....

The name of those files are in the folder of my back up. I open my nandroid folder and there are two different files. My backup and the original Smoked Glass ROM that I am running now. In my backup, named RetailBackup, are the files that I named out earlier.

OK, so you have a backup and you have Smoked glass. So you're trying to get rid of Smoked Glass and restore your old backup?

Yep, I want to restore my backup so that I can get Smoked Glass 4.5. I heard that if you load from ROM's from your original backup by removing your current ROM then it makes it less laggy, buggy, etc... The problem I have is that when I try to load up my original backup I get Error: Nandroid exited with status 21.

OK, so what method are you using, simple restore or advanced restore?

And I assume you are *wiping* both Data and cache first, right?

Yeah I wiped both 1st, then I was doing advanced restore.

Yeah. I have read on how to do this from a few other places and I did all the right steps. Or at least I thought I had but, I must not be since I keep getting that error over.

Have you tried wiping and doing a simple restore instead?

Did you rename the folder or anything after making the backup?

Yeah I tried doing a simple restore just a few minutes ago. I don't believe I changed the name after I made the backup.

Something isn't kosher - - try renaming the folder to something short, like just backup1....

I had a code 21 only once - and renaming my folder worked for me, but I had forgotten about it til now, sorry....

You are the man! I changed the name and it worked. Thanks so much! I would like to know what is your personal favorite ROM right now? I'm pretty simple I would like good battery life, the new 2.1 features, and those kinds of things. I don't really need live wallpapers or to overclock my phone to 1.2ghz. Any ROMs you would suggest based on that criteria?

TBH, I am gonna say one that not a lot of folks are liking - but it is a tossup b/w blackdroid's Ultimate 3.7 and The AD Community Beta 0.3.

Rather than pulling out features from 2.1 that have issues, they've made them work rather well. Mad props for that.

Ok, I might give those a try. I also had one more quick question about kernels and how exactly do you install those and which one is the best?
