Help IS there a way to turn off the trackball and button back lights without rooting?

I am looking for a way to turn off the trackball and button back lights without rooting. This used to be an option in 1.5, it was taken away with 2.1. I know there was a post about it way back when but that was 4 months ago. I know that it works off the sensor now but it really sucks at night when I dont want them on and have no way to turn them off.
I know there are a few apps but they only work if rooted. Does anyone know another way?
