On my SGS, when i was on my homescreen and long pressed the menu button, google search would popup. I have rooted and installed a lot of different rom versions, some of which had the same functionality. Now I am on Darky Rom JVQ 10.2 and I have google search app but cant change what the functionality of the menu button does...
