The reason behind this is that the Google Contact card takes priority over the Facebook one especially if the contacts are linked. Google use a 96x96 size contact image when stored on the cloud. If your contact gets sync'd to Google after you have sync'd your Facebook Contacts the image is resiezed so that the next sync that occurs means your contacts image is downgraded to the lower res picture resulting in the rubbish image. The best possible option is to use your own images in a numberless contact card. Then link with the contact with the number and make the numberless contact card the one that the others are linked to while ensuring sync with Google isn't selected on said numberless contact.
