Root ROOTING For Dummies

My first post...I just wanted to say thanks for this guide. Jus what I needed. I got my Evo on 10/1 and have been customizing like crazy without rooting and finally took the plunge.

I just have one quick question since I'm looking at ROMs now. I like running Launcher Pro for the customization, but it seems a lot of the custom ROMs are Sense based. Should I look for a non-Sense ROM or just install Launcher Pro over a Sense based ROM and not worry about Sense running in the background?

Oh, and one quick point. At the end of Step 5 of "Rooting Procedure", you say to make sure to have the phone plugged in while starting reflash_package.exe. But then in Step 6, you say to only plug in the device AFTER unrEVOked asks for it. Just a little confusing. I ended up plugging it in BEFORE starting reflash_package.exe as Android SPCS recommended and it worked fine.

Again, thanks a ton for the guide.

LauncherPro will run on any device whether it is Sense enables or Vanilla. So no worries, you'll be alright.

Thanks for pointing that out. I'll get that corrected.

As long as it's under the Android Device, you should be fine using it.

As long as you did not use unrEVOked FOREVER, you only need to use steps 9 - 10.

You will more than likely have to Un-Root in order to install the latest updates from Sprint. If there is an update available, and you are not able to receive it after a few months of it being OFFICIAL released, then you will almost definitely have to Un-Root your device.

From how I read how to do it, your device will be in Recovery Mode when you put the PC36IMG.zip into the Root of your SDCard. If this does not work, try it before putting your device into Recovery Mode and see if it works. Please let me know which works for you and I'll make changes as needed.

I'm rooted using 3.21. I get a notification every morning asking if I want to dl the new update. Can I just apply the update then re-root without unrooting?

Go ahead and apply the update, let it install and get back with us. Let us know how it went, if you lost root, or if it did not install. Might be able to change that little bit on the tutorial.

I downloaded it and tried to install it but I got the exclamation mark. I quess you do have to unroot first.

so if i root do i delete or freeze the bloat ware and when i go back to unroot are they still delete or frozen what ever one i am to do and can i accept the updates the ota and be fine??

For those of you that have had problems unrooting with the current pc36img and getting the error "main version is older", chdrummerdude over at xda has posted an updated pc36img.zip. The zip was extracted from the 3.29 ruu file. He said it loaded for him without a hitch and he has confirmed with terminal emulator that he is now totally unrooted. So who ever is interested here is the file... MEGAUPLOAD - The leading online storage and file delivery service and here is the thread from xda... If you delete the files you wont be able to accept any update ota.. the updates look for the bloatware and if they are not there it will not install. I suggest you only freeze the apps and not delete because in the event you want them back its more of a pain in the butt. Freezing the apps will still remove them from the app drawer. And if you do unroot for whatever reason you can just defrost them and they'll be back! Hope that was the answer you were looking for!

Yo Matlock, I love you man!!!

I will say that it went smoothly with my phone because I did do a factory reset prior to running this procedure. Then I attempted this with my wife's phone and It took me 3 times to get it done....each time getting further along in the process. In any event, we are a rooted household. For now, my main purpose was simply to get wifi tether. But I will explore other rooted apps. Also, I am seriously considering killing the household internet and living strictly off my phone for internet. If we were in a 4g area, it would be a no brainer. But we will so how it goes. In any event, I am very stoked!!!

Thanks again!!!!

PS.....I had attempted to root previously and there was some "trash" left on my SD card...the ole "Image Old" problem so zI never completed that attempt at rooting. But it did leave a trail of stuff that caused me to get the same message(Image is old) the minute I entered the boot loader. Anyway, once I got the SD card cleaned up, all went very smoothly. SO much so that I plugged my wife's phone in since everything was fresh in my mind. Like I said, It took me 3 times on her phone but we got her done!!! THANKS!!!!

Edit: I will say that I went into the SD card by mounting the phone as a drive and then erased anything related to Unrevoked and the PCImage36(or whatever it is called). Once I did this, THEN I went on with the process. I did not go thru what is posted 2 posts above. I just right clicked and deleted anything related to that previous root attempt.

Awesome. Will make sure to add this to the tutorial. Thanks loads. Didn't know he had updated the Image.

Just remember the UNFREEZE the apps Prior to UN-ROOTING. This will help prevent any hic-up later when UN-ROOTING and updating your Device.

I LOVE YOU TOO! Bwuahahh! Keep on rooting them phones! You'll have two little owns with Rooted EVOs in no time! rofl

I appreciate all the info you have gathered here on this thread. I wish more people were like this.

The android community turns me off sometimes because some people have such an elitist attitude as if they think everyone eats, sleeps, and shits android all day. It's great for people who know next to nothing to be able to come to ONE thread to find everything they need.

That being said, you need some kernel info :p

I completely agree! And thanks!

Yeah. I'll get some kernel info up as soon as I learn more about them. I've been around since the G1 and rooting is a whole new ballgame for me. But in due time, I will have everything imagenable! ... might have to open a root website! Rofl

OK, so I haven't gotten a solid answer about warranty from anyone before I root, hopefully I can get it here.

You say it voids warranty. OK, is that HTC's 1 year warranty? Or if I pay for insurance, that insurance is also void?

So if I'm rooted and my phone breaks I'm totally out of luck?

If I unroot phone and bring it in for something, will they know it's been roted and my warranty (and insurance?) is void?

Can I please get some clarification? :)

Thanks for this page!

From what I understand (dont hold me to it)

If you are rooted your warranty all around is void from HTC, SPRINT.. anyone but a couple ways around this would be to unroot your phone before taking it in or if you pay 8.00 or whatever a month just say you lost it if unable to unroot your phone.

If you have moral issues against lying well I guess you should just stay unrooted.

From what I can gather, voiding your warranty includes you..

HTC: No longer having a 1 Year Manufacturer Warranty
SPRINT: No longer having Insurance Coverage

And of course, it always depends on the Sprint Rep. you speak to while they are looking in your phone (they may know what a Rooted phone includes, and then they may not)..they May or Maynot submit a report to Sprint/HTC about your device being rooted. And yes, Warranty and Insurance can be revoked without notice to the Subscriber.

When someone says ROOTing voids your warranty and do it it at your own risk. That is exactly what they mean.

Needed:

Info on kernels and battery life. Some kernels provide performance over battery life, etc.

What is FPS UNLOCK - not that it is important anymore i guess.

Overclocking and pitfalls.

If you don't brick your phone you can always un-root, so the warrenty won't be voided. However still do at your own risk and know the risk.

Need info on AMUN RA vs CLOCKWORK. At least mention those two for what they are and how to get them (through rom manager).

Talk about using recovery tools.

Hope this becomes sticky :)

It's hard to determine battery life for most people, since everyone uses their device differently. I would just monitor what you use daily and see if battery life improves.

FPS-UNLOCK is frames per second. Before the FPS-OTA update, fps was capped at 30fps. Now reaches up to 50-59. Most roms incorperate the FPS-UNLOCK in their builds.

Hope this helps you.

Thanks for the how-to. I rooted a couple of days ago and it was very painless. I've been trying to read and understand as much as I can, but I knew I would need very detailed instructions and this was just the ticket.

I'm already trying different ROMs, but I have a question about kernels. I think the answer is obvious, but I haven't seen it written out.

Do I flash those the same way I would a ROM? I am currently putting ROMs on the root of my SD card and installing from there with ROM Manager. Do I flash a ROM, then go back and put a kernel on the root of the card and install via SD car with ROM Manager also? Something different?

Thanks again.
