Root ROOTING For Dummies

Yes, you flash kernals or any other addons just like flashing a rom. Just remember to make a nandroid of the rom before flashing a kernal, just in case there's a problem or if you don't like the kernal.

The new section for Flashing Kernels is up! Take a look, read, and understand before Flashing any new Kernels. Make sure they are designed for the HTC Evo. Or, if you dare, experiment with other Kernels for different devices. ;) Up to you!

SECTION 10: Flashing Kernels (ClockWorkMod)
FLASHING KERNELS

STEP 1: ROOT
Make sure you ROOT your device with SECTION 1 & 2.

STEP 2: BACKUP
Make sure you install ClockWorkMod and BACKUP your device with SECTION 3.

STEP 3: DOWNLOAD KERNEL
Find the Kernel you want to use, and download it.
The best place to start looking for Kernels is at HTC Evo Supersonic Kernels from XDA-Developers.

STEP 4: PUT IN SDCARD
Connect your Device to your Computer using your Micro USB cable.
Select DISK DRIVE and a popup window if your device should open on your Computer.
Find the Root of your SDCard. (LOWEST level possible, usually you'll see folders like DCMI and DATA)

STEP 5: BOOT CLOCKWORKMOD RECOVERY
Open ROM Manager and select Reboot into Recovery. Your Device will reboot itself.

STEP 6: SELECT ZIP FILE
Once your device has completely booted into ClockWorkMod Recovery Mode, select install zip from sd card.
Then select choose zip from sd card. Then navigate to the ZIP FILE you previously download and placed into the Root of your SDCard and Select it with the VOL DOWN toggle then press the POWER button.

The Kernel will then be installed. Do not worry if the screen starts acting up, flashing colors and different letters and numbers or full words on the screen. It's normal.

The Recovery Mode screen will reappear. Select reboot with the VOL DOWN toggle and press POWER button.

The Reboot will take longer than usual. Let it finish and boot up normal.

Your new KERNEL should be now active on your device! Congrats!

NOTES:

* Some Developers of Kernels may require you to use ADB to flash their Kernels. It is recommended you use their method of they use a particular way. You are not required though. But remember to always do a Backup of your device in the slim chance the Kernel is faulty, or something errors while you flash the Kernel.

* Some kernels can increase or decrease battery life. Also may increase or decrease the device performance.

* Need the stock 2.2 Kernel? Download it here Stock HTC EVO 2.2 Kernel

Thank you! I already have it figured out now (as of yesterday!), but this will be a big help to anyone getting in to rooting. It seems obvious, but you would be surprised at how hard it is to find something that specifically tells you how to flash a kernel vs a ROM.

i download titaium back up after following the root steps and when i run it it say it could not acquire root privileges what did i do wrong

in my menu i do have su privilages

Hi all , i just wanted to say thanks to Matlock and everyone else that made this thread possible.
I rooted my EVO on friday, took only about an hour or so while i was at work.
Now the only thing I can't get to work is the WiFi Tethering, which i will research and try to get resolved.
But other than that, i was abel to do what i wanted from the rooting; i froze the bloatware, and might get some nerve up and try a custom rom.

BUt all in all, a very simple procedure, thanks to the real nice instructions provied.

thanks to everyone.

Info on kernals can be found at XDA here is the link.

It's hard to determine battery life for most people, since everyone uses their device differently. I would just monitor what you use daily and see if battery life improves.

FPS-UNLOCK is frames per second. Before the FPS-OTA update, fps was capped at 30fps. Now reaches up to 50-59. Most roms incorperate the FPS-UNLOCK in their builds.

Hope this helps you.

I know the answers. He wanted feedback on what is missing in the guide :)

Many kernels (netarchy being one of them) instruct to wipe cache/dalvik cache. Give those instructions...

HOWEVER...

In my experience clearing the two caused major unrecoverable ****-ups until I unrooted my phone and re-rooted. Maybe I am an odd-ball case but warning lights may be needed.

Edit: Removed link, was already in post.

Did you check out the link in post #71 on this thread? I think most of us had the same issue but it was solved with that version of wireless tether!!! Give it a go!

I am using that version and cannot connect to my xp laptop with the encryption on but it works fine without encryption. I have double checked my password.

It continues with the obtaining ip address message while trying to connect but never will.

Just rooted my Evo last night with this method, works very well. Thank you for this tut.

I vote to be stickied.:D
+1
Using Matlock's step-by-step guide, this was a painless experience for me.

I don't plan on adding any new kernals or ROMs yet, and just wanted a basic root for WiFi tethering and a few other root-only apps. This is perfect!

A question though - if I need to turn the phone back into Sprint for whatever reason and I "unroot" first, my warranty should stay intact correct? In other words, Sprint then shouldn't know that I had my phone rooted at all?

Oh - and sticky this thread please! :)

Thanks flyjbaker for the suggestion, i'll give it a try and post update.
I used the WiFiTether from POST# 71, and i was able to get it up and running. It's not set up for encryption, but i'll test tha tlater on tonight.

Thanksa gain everyone for all the great info.

Nope... You can flash a ROM all by itself or you can flash a kernal on top of the ROM, its up to you.

ok hope these will be the final questions b4 i pick a rom or rom and kernel

1. i used ROM MANAGER and did the back up and saved it...... so if i pick a rom and dont like it i use my back up that i created and saved from rom manager

2. all the same above but instead with a kernel.

3. what do you guys as ppl who have been doing this more then me thinnk would be the best rom to start with.

4. also i am seeing alot of roms talking about kernel ( whatever the name is ) so that means that the keneral will be flashed or do all rom have kernel in it and i can choose a dff one if i like too

Matlock big Kudos to you for doing a fabulous job organizing something that is very difficult.

Looking forward to your next guides on ROMs and Kernels.

Mods please sticky this guide. It definitely deserves it.

1. If you create a backup, then you can always revert back to it if you try a ROM that you don't like. ROM manager makes this as simple as you have stated it.

2. The backup you create will be a backup of the current state of your phone, kernel included, so yes.

3. I am new to this as well and tried Fresh and Myn's Warm TwoPointTwo. Fresh is nice, snappy, and familiar, while showing off some advantages of root. Myn's Warm is easy to use as it is also Sense based, but there are some pretty neat cosmetic changes, in addition to taking advantage of being rooted. It also allows Sprint HotSpot to work, instead of requiring you to use Wireless Tether. I have stuck with Warm thus far (link in my signature).

4. All ROMs have a kernel of some sort with them and will function just fine. You can try other kernels to see if you get performance (be it speed or battery life) that is more beneficial to your usage and setup.

I had the same questions until recently, so I'm just trying to pay it forward! I hope that helps!
