I am working with a fella on another Thread with this same problem. I am searching online and probably going to email the developers to see if we can't get this issue resolved.
This is the current one I recommend for Wireless internet through your Evo. The encryption does not work yet.

HOW TO ENABLE WIRELESS ENCRYPTION
Okay, couldn't wait for a reply so I attempted to tackle this myself. And wound't you know it, success!
Step 1
Open Wireless Tether and Press the icon to start tethering. (no encryption)
Step 2
Open your Connect to a Network window and connect to your Device.
Step 3
Press Menu on your device, then press Access Control. Enable Access-Control by pressing the White bar on the top right. The current connected computers will be listed. Press on the check-box to allow connection of your computer. Apply setting on the bottom of the screen. Your computer will be disconnected then it will reconnect.
Step 4
Press Menu on the main screen and select Settings. Check Enable WiFi-Encryption.
Press Change Passphrase. Change it to something simple like 12345678 to start out.
Press Back on your phone. Your computer will be disconnected.
Step 5
Open your Connect to a Network window. Your connection to your device should be disabled. Right-Click on your SSID (name of your Device) and select Properties.
Step 6
WINDOWS VISTA: Under the Security tab...
The Security Type should be WPA2-Personal
The Encryption Type should be AES
Then enter your passphrase for the Network Security Key (12345678)
Try this out. Any snags, let me know!

Thanks for the reply!!! That is exactly what I did after I asked the question. It is a 100 page+ thread but I did get the gist of it after 8 pages or so... I will give it a go when I get time.
Matlock 1st I want to thank you for all the help you provide on this site. Now for as my HTC EVO, it's rooted but will not connect to the internet. I'm using version 205.11, I tried the above instructions be still it reads connect with limited connectivity. I have know idea what I'm doing wrong but I can not get this thing to tether what so ever. I've tried several versons 9, 8, etc... If you have any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks...
This version works for me but not with encryption turned on.

I can't help but think this is a lot more to take in than it was for the Moment. I have read through this several times and still don't really understand the process.
It's probably because HTC sends out more updates and stuff... but I'm not sure. My goal now is to keep everything the way it is on my phone EXCEPT:
- freeze bloatware (since apparently uninstalling means phone updates don't work)
- unlock hotspot/tether ability
I'll just have to keep reading till I find out exactly how to do that.

Can some confirm that the unrevoked 3.21 will work with the last up date OTA?
I rooted 2 of EVO before but uncle want me to root his phone and the condition is that he have not done any update since he had the phone. I think it is still on Android 2.1. so the question is...
1. Should I root the way it is (android 2.1) using Unrevoke 3.21?
2. Should I update to the most current OTA first then root using RV 3.21?

Yes unrevoked will root the last ota. My advice would be to accept all the updates prior to rooting so the phone will be current and up to date. Once its done updating run unrevoked and your good to go!
Thanks, this makes sense. I did a little research and it looks like that patch came in SP2 but I have SP3. A little more research shows I may need to update the driver for my wireless card which is in a Dell laptop.
Am I correct in thinking that since I am SP3 the wireless card update is the way to proceed?

Got titanium backup but I guess I was tired and missed this step to back up my apps and system data:

Well, I was more referring to the first 2 posts. I exhausted myself trying to read it too, so I just read the first few posts, then went to the last few pages. If I have an questions, I search the thread first, then post. Let me know how you like it! I'm going back to the stock kernel soon, Kings #11 is good, but not great, nor is the Zippy (I think) kernel that I am using now.
It might seem overwhelming, but once you get started, it isn't. Matlock's instructions are VERY comprehensive and almost redundant in an effort to be as safe and successful as possible. Which part are you hung up on? The preparation is the long part, the rooting is quick.
Update the wireless card which now has WPA2-PSK and still no luck. In fact while following Matlock's procedure I tried to select another protocol and when I try and connect it forces back to WPA2-PSK.
I guess I'm going to live with unsecured connectiion for awhile.
This brings me back to the 2nd question I asked over in another thread I started, when using unsecured but using allowed access is that still fairly safe? It seems under that method it will allow anyone to connect but will not allow Internet connectivity.

Keep reading and confirming what you need to know. Until you are completely comfortable, you should keep away from rooting. Once your ready, you'll know.

And this is the setup for the pre11.apk? Just confirming.
When using Titanium backup, it's designed to work with the Current ROM. If you Change your ROM to another one, Titanium Backup may cause conflicts with the new ROM if you try to Apply the settings to another ROM. I'll add this to the How-To.
1. Did you do a full backup with ROM Manager? (I hope you followed how IMPORTANT this was)
2. If you did, you'll have to Restore your Backed up image with ROM Manager.
If not, you need to Un-Root. Good Luck.
I'll try and see if I can't find someone with an XP OS so I can play with it and see if I can't get it to work for you. I'll search online in the meantime.
But yeah, you'll be safe even if you are using an unsecured signal. You'll KNOW when someone mooches off your internet. You'll phone will Vibrate and it'll tell you someone linked to your internet.
I am able to make my 2 PC with XP Pro SP2 to work with 2.0.5-pre9 running WPA2-PSK fine. But I notice it is case sensitive, so have you try that?
If you want a secure network you might want to roll back to 2.0.5-pre9 and update the WPA2-PSK patch
just remember it is case sensitive. or you might just want to wait atleast I got my to work for now.

Your on the right track.
After you FLASH the Baked Snacks 1.8, your contacts should automatically download to your device from your GMail account, if you saved them on GMail, and not Phone.
If the Titanium Backup caused some sort of error previously, then you may want to avoid trying to re-apply any settings.
Now, you may try Restoring your Apps using Titanium backup, that may not effect anything. Try it, see how it fares.
If that doesn't work, you'll have to re-apply the ROM and install the apps directly.
You may also want to try..
That worked for me pretty easily.
In your case, After Rooting would apply to after you FLASH your ROM. Once you download AppBrain, your apps should be available for download. Or even MASS Install.

The new section for Flashing Kernels is up! Take a look, read, and understand before Flashing any new Kernels. Make sure they are designed for the HTC Evo. Or, if you dare, experiment with other Kernels for different devices.Up to you!
SECTION 10: Flashing Kernels (ClockWorkMod)
FLASHING KERNELS
STEP 1: ROOT
Make sure you ROOT your device with SECTION 1 & 2.
STEP 2: BACKUP
Make sure you install ClockWorkMod and BACKUP your device with SECTION 3.
STEP 3: DOWNLOAD KERNEL
Find the Kernel you want to use, and download it.
The best place to start looking for Kernels is at HTC Evo Supersonic Kernels from XDA-Developers.
STEP 4: PUT IN SDCARD
Connect your Device to your Computer using your Micro USB cable.
Select DISK DRIVE and a popup window if your device should open on your Computer.
Find the Root of your SDCard. (LOWEST level possible, usually you'll see folders like DCMI and DATA)
STEP 5: BOOT CLOCKWORKMOD RECOVERY
Open ROM Manager and select Reboot into Recovery. Your Device will reboot itself.
STEP 6: SELECT ZIP FILE
Once your device has completely booted into ClockWorkMod Recovery Mode, select install zip from sd card.
Then select choose zip from sd card. Then navigate to the ZIP FILE you previously download and placed into the Root of your SDCard and Select it with the VOL DOWN toggle then press the POWER button.
The Kernel will then be installed. Do not worry if the screen starts acting up, flashing colors and different letters and numbers or full words on the screen. It's normal.
The Recovery Mode screen will reappear. Select reboot with the VOL DOWN toggle and press POWER button.
The Reboot will take longer than usual. Let it finish and boot up normal.
Your new KERNEL should be now active on your device! Congrats!
NOTES:
* Some Developers of Kernels may require you to use ADB to flash their Kernels. It is recommended you use their method of they use a particular way. You are not required though. But remember to always do a Backup of your device in the slim chance the Kernel is faulty, or something errors while you flash the Kernel.
* Some kernels can increase or decrease battery life. Also may increase or decrease the device performance.

ok quick question i used UR3 to root so is that full root or not?
second i am using baked snack 1.8 and it said it requires full root but i flashed with it anyways lol so if i aint full root and it requires do i just not get some of the features or what if i am full root with UR3 then disregaurd this last question lol
