Samsung Galaxy 2 with GTi9100

I want to upgrade the firmware to the newest version of Android, but I am new to this and would like some guidance. But when I hook it up to my PC, it says it is not recognized. Do I have to do this from the device itself?

Google for "Samsung Kies." Install that. It will include the latest USB driver for your device. Once detected, it will search for available updates and prompt you accordingly.

Tried it on two computers (one running XP and one Win7) and it tells me : please connect to a device in Kies, even though I am connected. The battery recharges, so I know the USB is working. It says in the MTP applications that it is connected on the phone, but the PC screen says "please connect to a device". Tried troubleshooting the connection problem and rebooting, same thing each time.

Will it reset all of my settings? This is a phone I purchased from a friend and he has it laid out nicely, I don't want to lose his setup.

Plug your phone into your PC via USB. Go to the device manager and find unknown or Samsung device under USB devices. Right click and uninstall. Remove Samsung Kies, then reinstall. That should correct the USB driver.

Did you read through the guide? Is it available for your phone according to your CSC code? If so, and you can get it through Kies, it shouldn't change your settings. What kind of settings are you talking about?

If its not available for your phone and you have to use Odin to install it, yes it will erase your current settings. If you read the guide, there is also a section for helping to get Kies to work.

Also make sure its a data cable youre using and not just a two wire charging cable :thumbup:
