Tablets with 3G

So, my first dumb question on these forums.

Since a tablet with 3G has a sim card, that means that you have a phone number (IIUC). So that means that the tablet can send and receive SMS and MMS.

Can those with 3G tablets confirm this please?

I cant speak for any carrier besides verizon... With my galaxy tab 7 with embedded 3g I can in fact send and recieve texts.

Can't speak for any of those from American carriers, but all international versions of 3G Samsung tablets except for the original Tab 10.1 can call, SMS, and MMS. Yes even the Note 10.1 can make calls

Any tablet can do that with google voice, no sim card needed.

Well, he is talking specifically about 3G tablets with SIM cards. Google Voice is kinda pointless if you are not in the states or you won't be connected to WiFi for extended periods of time. 3G tablets can be treated as oversized cellphones.

Thanks for your replies. Yes, I'm not in the US and I don't want to rely on wifi. I'm tempted to get a really crappy phone and a 7 inch tablet with 3G and to use the tablet for everything apart from calling. But then that Note 2 would solve both probs.

go with the phone and tablet combo, once you have a tablet, you will never want less then a 7in screen.

all my phone does anymore is provide my tablet with Wifi, do all my texting and email, games with it. You can make calls with a tablet, long as it has a built in mic.

And if I got a tablet with 3G, I wouldn't even need the phone to be a hotspot.

I can get a mobile phone connection with 60 mins talk and 60 SMS for 0€ per month. Yes thats a zero. No internet, no MMS, just voice and SMS. I can get another service (from the same supplier) that has unlimited calls, unlimited SMS, MMS and Internet up to 3Gig (reduced download afterwards but no extra charge) for 20€ per month.

Since I have the TF101, I'll look at the 3G 7 inchers that have microSD slots. Hopefully this new Nexus will have a microSD slot.

Sure you can send SMS from your Tab (having SIM card).
There are apps that allows you to send text messages to mobile contacts using your data by using web SMS gateways (like freebiesms.co.uk).
Find a good app for your region and enjoy sending free SMS from your tab.
