For those that aren't rooted, here's your tethering option:

I thought the same thing but did not want to TC. Maybe the price will be comparable.

Tether is an excellent program and the company is fantastic to deal with.

Loved it on my BB and was thrilled when I got the email today!

Seems to work great for me. Wish it told me at what speed I'm connected at like PDAnet does.

It's still in beta. They may have a feedback section located somewhere. Let them know you want that added.

Why not just tether natively? There's a thread that shows how to do it w/o any restrictions and it costs nothing. The only reason to use PDAnet would be if you wanted to use BT or see UL/DL speeds.

I dont know about others, but I am very leary about changing those settings - while VZ really has no problem monitoring traffic regardless, i think those modifications make it more obvious that something is screwy...

Here, and I HIGHLY recommend it. Been using this method for many years on many phones without a problem.

btw, use the search box in the future..

When i set up the tether natively using broadband connect usb option and editing the usernames, problem with it, is it shuts off 3g on the cell phone and hooks it up to laptop, so you can only use laptop whilst plugged in.

I like the freedom being able to use phone and laptop at same time doing different things so I use pdanet, haven't tried tether yet, might tho.

Should the native tether act like this necosino?

After trying tether, it seems ok, lots of bugs tho that they need to fix, like if i stream my webcam to my family back home, or try and watch a streamed movie, its too much for tether and cuts me off, kind of like a bottleneck effect.

also when you close the tether PC program (Vista 32) its doesnt, close the Adb.exe process or the tether.exe process. as far the as the Phone app goes, it opens and closes lol, nothing much else to it, ive posted on there forums with some suggestions which basically are in pdanet, so tbh pdanet is probably better to me.

My free trial just ran out and its annoying the way it pops up every 10 mins, but I might just register it, have to think about it.

    Thanks

To be honest, I've never tried, lol.. I only tether like once a week, if that.. And it's just to use my friends' laptops when they don't have wifi.

Am I the only one using a free version of pdanet? I got it from the Android Market and didn't pay a penny for it...

Try doing online banking, pay bills, or any other site that uses HTTPS, it won't work...

I need a mac version if it exist somewhere, also, I use the free pdanet and only use it to goof off as well, lol. PDAnet keeps me satisfied, but I'd give this other 1 a chance, if they made it for mac.

    Just use the DUN method.

This thread has nothing to do with an alternative to root though. Root allows wifi tethering.
