I decided to root for 2 reasons. 1., being the apps I missed that require it and 2., Because when a bootloader is released I have a feeling Rom Manager won't be to far behind with easy backups/rom loading and since I'm already rooted I can just download it from the market again and go!
I plan on waiting for a week or so to see if any difficulties arise and what the work around involves. However, if s genius programmer manges to crack the boot-loader before that (unlikely) then I'll root early.
Root means superuser access. That means you have complete control over the entire filesystem.
What that means to the layperson --
You can install apps that require this elevated level of privilege, such as:
AdFree -- block ads!
drocap2 -- take screenshots
setcpu -- manage how fast your CPU goes
Titanium Backup -- the ultimate backup utility
Wifi tether -- turn your phone into a mobile hotspot
The bootloader may never be decrypted. If all of the "heavy hitters" are now rooted, I don't see why we shouldn't do it. An OTA CANNOT brick your phone because it's rooted.
The question should be, "root or don't root?" I can understand why some people would hold out to see if the bootloader will be decrypted, but if you're going to root you might as well do it now IMO.
The Froyo OTA update will. Not sure about any minor OTA updates like the one we received the other day.
With that said, you do bring up a point that you can hold out and wait until Froyo to root. That would be the only reason to wait that I see, if you are going to root at all.
Birdman did hint that "something larger than root for the Droid X" is on the horizon, but who knows when that will be. The bootloader is near impossible to crack, but I'm as optimistic as all of you that it will be done. Eventually.
FroYo is supposed to be here in a couple of weeks. I definitely understand why you would wait.
I just don't see any reason to root unless the boot loader is cracked. The only thing I can see using root for is wireless tethering. What else am I missing by not rooting?
So when it comes out lose root and get Froyo then wait for the new root, that's my plan. They may already have more than one exploit, they just don't tell us so Moto doesn't patch them
