Help Possible Battery Fix from HTC

For whatvitvis worth. With my new terrible battary performance, I turned off both auto sync and background data. Then went to market so had to turn background data back on and forgot to turn it back off. But my battary is back to how it was with 2.1.

So only leaving auto sync off fixed my issues. Must mean a problem with some apparently in 2.2 causing the sync to always be on? Regardless, syncing not an issue with me. Can manuallybsync until that app gets fixed. And life just easier with data on.

Doesn't turning off background data stop gmail, weather, and stocks and everything else to stop sending. How could this be seen as a possible fix.

when you turn off background data there is an alert that pops up explaining the fact that SOME APPS MAY STILL USE THE BACKGROUND DATA.

so yes making sure all your apps are not doing it is a possible way to locate the problem.

with that said, isn't there an indicator in the notification bar if an app is constantly syncing, you would be able to tell that way if i'm not mistaken.

Sadly, much worse -- I've gone from an average of around 14-16 hours per charge to having it drain completely in less than 6 hours, without me even using it. It was running pretty hot too -- holding my hand an inch from the screen, I can feel the heat. So I guess something in this update caused something else to run continously, though checking the process list doesn't really show anything abnormal running. Gonna try a battery pull and see if maybe it's a fluke.

I think it's way too early to make any definitive statements about battery life. In a week, we'll have some decent data. I know I spent a lot of time playing with my new 2.2 system and that will drain more battery than usual. Then I spent two hours, today, in a basement with marginal cell signal so that killed me for that time. Then I downloaded a bunch of stuff, then I ran some benchmarks...

What I do know, however, is that they have not fixed the charging bug (or whatever you want to call it) that if you leave the charger on for a long time, the battery gets to 100% and then the charger shuts off... so when you come back in the morning, for example, and unplug the charger, you get to, say, 89% within a minute of use. That problem persists (I was hoping it was resolved for it's a huge reason people think the battery life sucks).

If you have nothing constructive to add please refrain from posting your nonsense. This is a forum not grammar school. I belong to many forums and I have to say that this one by far has the most trolls.

First let me fix your post for you.

There. That's better. Secondly, I'm not trolling. Nothing in my message was trying to elicit an emotional response. I just saw the word "worst" used in place of the word "worse" several times in this thread, so I wanted to make sure people knew how to use the words properly.

There's nothing wrong with wanting people to be educated enough to properly put together words and sentences. Even on the interwebs.

First of all, that is trolling in my opinion as well.

It's even stated in the Site Rules/Guidelines that you are not to...
...take it upon yourself to play Grammar Nazi. If someone's post is literally so bad you cannot understand it, fine - ask them to rephrase. But do not nitpick and ruin threads just to show how high-n-mighty-like you can be.

Now cut it out and be a rule abiding, contributing member or face the consequences.

Same issue here, and its taking FOREVER to charge. How's charging it for you?

Try a power cycle, if you've not done that since the update. Seems like something is running and that should kill it (unless you're in a low-signal area... scanning for radio signal is really bad and does exactly what you describe. I have that problem at my office during the week. On the weekends, I can go over 24 hours without a charge, but during the week it's <5% after 14-16 hours). No change with Froyo.

Plugged it in about an hour ago, when it was under 10%, and now it's up to 63%, with a short break where I took it to the crapper to play Word Drop :) So the charging bit seems normal, though I've never actually checked to see what normal was before.

And the signal was pretty strong the whole time -- but I know what you're saying, where I work I get zero bars most of the time, and my battery just drains like crazy (luckily I work at a desk all day and just leave it on the charger most of the time). At home though, I get ridiculously good battery life. Until now. Poop.

If you had Google Talk signed out and turned off auto sign in previously you need to do this again after the latest update.

True story! Thanks, only took 20 min of messing with Gmail, to relize I shoulda been looking @ "Talk" lol...... Been a long day!

I also noticed - Froyo is killing apps on its own now? Please forgive me if someones already posted about this but, I was messing around with settings and out of no where, it said "12 apps closed" or however it was worded - no I dont have ATK or anything running. Maybe whatever is now built into Froyo to kill apps is whats eating peoples batteries? Shot in the dark but, worth mentioning. Is there any way to disable whatever Froyo is doing/using to kill apps?

For those having an issue with significant battery drain after installing Froyo, uninstall the app 'LED Light'. This app was breaking my camera and causing my phone to be always on. After I first installed Froyo, my camera and battery was fine, but about 3 or 4 hours later, my camera was broke and my phone was always on.

I too was having bad battery life and my camera and camcorder would NOT open. After getting rid of it after a factory reset and not installing it again, the camera and camcorder now open and the battery life is basically back to normal pre-2.2.

Hmm no I have perfect signal at my house, 6 bars most of the time. Been charging since 5 something, and the battery meter only moved up 2 bars. It's 10:12 now. This is dumb -_-

Up Time: 13:40
Awake Time: 6:34

BTW I charge with the USB cord hooked up to the computer. And charging before 2.2 was perfectly fine this way. Don't know whats causing the slow azz charging. Already restarted the phone couple times since 2.2. I turned my Evo off completely last night to charge in case for whatever reason it didn't fully charge.

I never suggested it as a permanent thing - I suggested that folks try this for a few hours or less just to unstick whatever might be stuck.

That worked for me.

Pretty sure that way USB charging works, it will be slower than the wall. Regardless, not that slow, crazy. Silly question, have you tried plugging it into the wall instead?

I had LED Light when i upgraded and i put it back on after factory reset.

I just took it off in hopes that would solve my always on issue and NOPE!!! Still a broke POS.

I used the Network app to once again reset the radio. (I updated my radio as part of a root upgrade - so this may or may not apply - but give it a try.)

The procedure I followed was to use the Network app (free, Market) and even though it would already say CDMA Auto, I set it to GSM Auto, exited, re-entered and reset it to CDMA Auto - and then updated my PRL.

Right after that, my charging times returned to normal.

Too soon to say how battery life is - but overall I'm not having any issues with fast burnout.

Recap:

  • Toggle background data on/off - give it an hour off
  • Reset CDMA with Network app: toggle it GSM auto (PRL), exit, then restart and set it to CDMA auto (PRL)
  • Update PRL
  • If still having trouble check your log files with aLogcat to see if you have a rogue app or some app conflicts.
  • Check your browser history - is anything accessing the web you didn't know about before?

Froyo isn't creating new problems - but it IS exposing underlying ones that were there before - in my point of view.

Another quick note - if your camera isn't working or if you're still have battery problems, either kill or uninstall LED Light.

Hope this helps.

I don't blame the underlying OS, i blame the idiots at HTC that can't do simple things like remove the 30FPS cap, add the h.264 to 720p, or create a stable ROM to save their life.

Usually a big corporation with paid professionals come up with the best software, but it seems when it comes to android the development community has more collective knowledge in their pinky than any company that makes their own Android roms for their phones.
