motorola droid2 and droid x already pegged for end of life!

guess I am not that surprised.. maybe in 2011 I will be ready to change away from my D1, but at the speed with which this whole space is changing, it actually seems logical. Apple may not launch new phones that often, but the Droid community is moving fast and furious and playing catch-up and trying to move ahead, it totally stands to reason to have such a short life span. we aren't talking about the Palm era anymore where the phones and OS hang around for years and years

Clearing the shelves for LTE and the (unfortunately) iPhone...I can upgrade early, but I'm thinking of waiting until September (2011 - when my official upgrade is). My reasoning? I love my Droid still, give LTE a chance to get out this way (we usually get updated VZW tech when Los Angeles does, so it will hopefully be here by then), and finally allow time for several phone choices for LTE (rather than 1 or 2 at launch)...

Technically NE2 can be had as soon as 18 months on a regular schedule, but I know a few people that were claiming that they were able to take advantage of their NE2 in as little as 11 months when the DROID was first announced - I suppose b/c VZW wanted to increase sales of the phone as much as possible....

When the Droid first came out I called *611 to beg for an early upgrade on Nov 6th. I had to wait untill the 15th as that was my one year mark. They did let me upgrade but charged me a 20 dollar early upgrade fee. Now I was thinking I should have only gone with a 1 year plan  But, I think the Droid will last me to term. (18 mo.s) But ... I am gonna have to wait and see what the next large community Dev phone will be. Once you get the taste of roming and stuff, your hooked and there is no other way to enjoy your phone :D

that post refers to the use of a usb air card, not cellphone data usage. however it is nice to know as i use verizons usb760 with my laptop and i pay $60 a month for 5 gig per month! WTG virgin!

ok, good point, but take a look at the plans they list here >> Virgin Mobile USA << unlimited text, e-mail, data, and web. starts at $25/month!! for 300 minutes.

yeah virgin is definately cheaper, but thay have always been cheaper. i dont think verizon will take them into account when determining their rates. verizon is more along the lines of att competition wise and i think they will follow suit with them. i posted a thread awhile back about verizons top management (cant remember who) saying their 4g will likely be teired and that there is no immediate plans on changing the 3g plans.

I still dont think the iphone is going to come to verizon i just feel verizon has so much with the droid line it would just not make sense for apple. I mean its smart for at&t because they cripple and only release lower end smart phones(captivate is the exception) other then the iphone. I just think verizon wouldnt be as willing to give apple as much money and commitment as at&t does when they have this line of phones that they are committing to. Just my opinion.

Then your CSR wasn't as nice as other - or didn't get the memo.

Verizon has been generous with their upgrades lately letting anyone with a contract expiring in 2010 get an early upgrade for the Droid X and the Droid 2. They'll probably do the same for the upcoming phones as well and I'm betting it'll extend into next year as well.

I think that after a point they will stop doing it....unless they offer it bundled with the new tiered data plans....

while this is true it's also rumored that the 4g plan will be teired similar to att's data plans and rates. if so i would stick with 3g.

Exactly. I don't want to have to do a new contract that includes updated tiered plan pricing....

Considering all of the hullabaloo that has been going on about the closed-door meetings between VZW and Google, I can say that it is a sure bet (IMO) that VZW will not get the iPhone if VZW and Google can come to an agreement.
