New to android, Droid 2 or Droid X?

I'm making the leap from iPhone to Android, I'm up for renewal and the combination of my gen 1 iPhone dying and the whole Antennagate drama has me fed up. I've tried to do a lot of research to choose between the Droid 2 and Droid X, I was initially drawn to the Incredible (don't laugh, I didn't know better, the sense ui caught my eye), and have learned better. I have gone to three Verizon stores, including Costco's counter, to ask the associates their opinion, and not surprisingly, no one can give me a good answer. The best they can do is "this one has a keyboard, this one doesn't". So far, what I've been able to gather is:
1. Droid X has more 8gb more memory
2. Droid X has a better camera

Aside from that, everything else I've heard is more preferences (bigger screen vs fitting in pocket, etc.). Can you guys help point me in the right direction? I know I am a newb, but please be nice. I'm hoping to start creating themes once I get my Droid (I'm a graphic designer w/ too much free time), so I'm hoping to be a somewhat regular on this board. Thanks!

I have an Eris and am leaning heavily towards the X....I don't like the moving parts of the 2 and don't want a keyboard. Internally the two phones are very close.....so a lot depends on your preferences.

Can I vote twice? We ordered a droid 2 for my wife and a Droid X for me at the same time. She wanted a physical keyboard and found the Droid X a bit large for her to comfortably hold while using it. I liked the larger screen of the Droid X and actually found it the more comfortable of the two to use, although I could easily get used to either one. I have not received my Droid X yet but based on some of the pictures posted in the Droid X forum and what we've been able to capture with the Droid 2, I'd at least predict the edge on the camera to go to the Droid X.

As Blue218 noted, both phones have the same processor and processor speed, same RAM, same display technology and resolution, etc. so basic functionality and performance should be very similar, at least once the Droid X gets its Froyo update some time next month. The Droid X comes with a 16GB memory card rather than the 8GB provided with the Droid 2 but I believe both have the same potential with 8GB internal and a maximum 32GB card.

Some other differences, the Droid X has HDMI out (limited to photos and videos in your Gallery and not available for streaming or Blockbuster) and an integrated FM radio (only available when using a headset as the headset cable serves as the antenna). The Droid X also has three mics and integrated noise cancellation using one of the mics to sense the ambient noise. The three mics also allow for different combinations to be selected for different situations when recording. With voice-to-text apps, Swype, etc. many people don't seem to see as much need for a physical keyboard anymore, however if you do prefer having a physical keyboard then the Droid 2 keyboard is the nicest I've used on a phone.

If you're just looking for the baddest-ass Android phone on Verizon that money can buy, we'd recommend a Droid X or Droid Incredible any day over this, especially since all three are the same price -- unless you're hell-bent on going with a physical keyboard, of course. Both of those other handsets offer superior cameras, a better UI (in the case of the Incredible), and a better display (in the case of the X).

I'd like to weigh in here. I think it depends. For the OP who is coming from an iPhone, I'd say he would be right at home with an X. People like me, who came from Blackberry, the transition to the 2 with it's keyboard is a much easier shift. Maybe one day I will feel ready to venture into a model with no keyboard, but for now it was a "must have" for me, in light of what I was used to.

I came from iPhone 3GS and chose the D2 over the X. I think you're right that a lot of it has to do with preference. Both phones are very similar hardware wise with the exception of what you mentioned, but i personally have not had any problems with the camera on my D2. Its a lot better than the iPhone's so I'm happy!

It really is ALL preference and opinion.. I was faced with the same decision, except I was coming from an Env touch to my first ever smart-phone. I went to Verizon and played with both until I was sure the clerks were going to make me leave.

I liked the X, don't get me wrong. It's a multimedia beast. If you're really considering your phone for video capture (HD), being able to playback HD home movies, watch movies on your phone, anything of that nature, I'd say it's the phone for you.

However if you're like me, I already had a really good camera and camcorder. So going from 480p to 720p on my phone was a non-issue. I realized the the HD pics and video eat up the storage, so the 8g vs 16g SD card is sort of a wash. I got burnt on the dare, and swore I'd never buy a keyboardless phone again (but that X did tempt me...) and I liked the fact that I would have Froyo, and it's updates.That coupled with the fact it and my new every 2 were on the 12th....

In the end the 2 just felt better in my hands, fit in my pocket better (be sure to ask before you do that in a store....lol) and felt less likely to break if I sat on it.

Going From a Blackberry Bold-Eris-Droid2, I really love the Droid 2 but i really enjoy the physical Keyboard and having the option to us swype should i need a quick text or something. I can't comment on the Droid x Speed wise since i had mine for a few weeks with 2.1, so obviously for me the D2 was faster. Input lag on the x was so so i mean coming from the eris with 2.1 anything had faster input (hated that damn phone) the D2 for me is amazingly fast input wise not granted i've only had it a few days and haven't quite filled it up with a lot of apps and stuff . Honestly I would say it's up to personal preference, for me the Droid X was just to big didn't feel comfortable in my pocket since i work 10-12hrs in a warehouse I was just worried I would break the phone.

Droid 2 with froyo all the way. By the time droid x becomes available 1.3ghz android phonse will be out. By the time it gets the froyo ota update, a 1.5ghz gingerbread phone will be out. Bottom line get and start enjoying the best that's actually available now = D2/froyo/verizon.

I really considered the X but it hasn't been available. I also saw my managers X and couldn't believe how big it is. Maybe the larger size makes up for not having a physical keyboard as I can't use the landscape virtual keyboard on the 2.

I was awaiting the Fascinate but couldn't take all the problems my Omnia was having, so Droid 2 it was.

Wrong and wrong. Ordered a Droid 2 and Droid X at the same time and already have both. Droid X Android 2.2 update comes out next month. And I would guess that the Drod 2 and Droid X both get a Gingerbread update at about the same time, which might be about the same time that 1.3GHz devices come out.

fwiw with my eris we were hearing eclair updates from november till whenever it actually came out in may iirc.

I've played around with the x and honestly, it depends on personal prefrence. If multimedia is what your looking for, get the x.

I'm liking the d2 quite a bit and cant complain. Sizewise i think phones have gotten a little out of control but I dont see the screen size making a huge difference personally.

I have been using my Droid and a friend's Samsung Galaxy S/ Captivate and I think his 4.0" screen makes the phone big. DX is even bigger and I am not certain I would be able to use a phone that big.

D2 is a great phone too and 3.7" screen is big enough too.

I have a droid x, main reason being that I also have a Hero (HTC) and can't type worth a hill of beans on it. So I needed a better keyboard, almost went with the LG Ally, and then played with an X pre-launch and was hooked. I can type on it fine, and have found the bigger screen to be an asset when trying to read, well, anything!

I still like the idea of a physical keyboard though, and for me that would be the one thing I would (and did) base my decision on. I've not tried the keyboard on the D2, but did on the original Droid, and hated it. So if it's as good as others have said, it may well have given the X a run for it's money, had they both been available at the same time.

But I am happy with my X, and don't plan to change phones again any time soon. Like others have said, it's all about what feels best to you.

Droid X is soooo tempting. But I like having the physical keyboard. The Droid2 keyboard is actually decent, much better than the Droid.

I say get a Droid2. All the themers moved from the Droid to the X. We needs peeps. =)

Swypes really good. The X has big fat keys because of its big fat screen. If you've been using an iPhone a physical keyboard probably won't matter much. My friend is all iPhone but when ever he plays with my phone he always says i'd be nice if the iPhone had a physical keyboard.

Since one has a keyboard and one doesnt....it will be all about what u want your phone to have.

The X has more features, the Droid 2 has better battery life, (higher rated talk and standby time...and thats with the Droid 2 having a smaller battery) one phone is bigger....

If u take the keyboard and phone size out, I would choose the X. It has very good battery life for a phone that size.

It is personal preference. I have a Droid X and Droid 2 coming. My wife wanted a little smaller size and keyboard and I wanted the large screen for web surfing and videos.

I believe that this is really oversimplifying the issue. The display's diagonal dimension is a factor but so are the display format, the area of the device that is not display, the depth of the phone and even things like the shape of the corners and the surface finishes. I know that when I set my Voyager or other older phones next to my Droid X, the Droid X is larger in surface area but I am amazed by how much larger the DX's display is relative to the overall size of the other phones.

The perceived acceptability of a device's size also seems to likely be greatly influenced by the intended use. I personally see the larger screen of the DX being beneficial for use such as using the web and being able to view, and possibly edit, drawings, specifications, cost estimates and proposals right on my phone. Such considerations can affect the perceived desirable or acceptable size. In comparison, my wife's use is quite different and her Droid 2 better fits how she uses her phone, including in size.

So what is "big enough" or "too big" seems to be subjective and the culmination of many factors rather then being determined solely by the diagonal display dimension.
