Help Froyo battery drain Samsung Galaxy S

After installing the official Froyo update yesterday, I've seen my battery performance nosedive significantly. Previously I've taken some pains to minimize my battery usage the last few months and have been fairly successful (screen brightness, gps, wifi etc.). Today I have noticed an immediate increase in battery drain. My phone was fully charged during the upgrade.

After unplugging it when I got up this morning, for example, I had to plug it in later after almost no usage because it was down to 40 percent. After the charge, I unplugged it and it dropped to 87% in 35 minutes with almost no use. After just 3 hours, it was down to 42%.

I've gone through all the settings to make sure everything was where it was before. It's obvious to me something is going on with Froyo. Anyone else notice the same?

The strangest thing that I have is, the phone looses 40% approx charge while I'm asleep. Last night I charged it to 100%, went to bed, and this morning it's 58%.

Must be the faries making calls, lol.

check you wifi sleep policy, you have to press the menu key and then 'advanced' under wifi settings.

also try turing off autorotate fomr the pull-down - it uses 4% CPU on my phone - constantly when on, but I'm not sure if it does it when the screen is off!

Otherwise you need some kind of anti-fairy app ;-)

I have EXACTLY the same; charged till 100%, unplugged it at 00:00h, went to bed and woke up at 8:00.
  • Wifi: OFF
  • GPS: OFF
  • Bluetooth: OFF
  • Taskkiller switched off all running apps before closing my eyes
At 8:00 AM my battery was a 62% level (according to SystemPanel and BatteryWatch).
Now, 5 hours later after hardly using my Galaxy S, my battery is at 33%.

SystemPanel says that during the night my TOP APP was SYSTEM (red android icon; internal process) and was responsible for 7% usage.
All other apps were under 1% usage.

Now, just looking at it next to me, my CPU Activity is on average 23%.

UPDATE: just back from a smoke; and during my smoke i switched "Auto rotate" in the pull down menu OFF.
==> CPU Usage by 'System' dropped to 1% - 3%.

Mayby this my "fairy" that pulling my CPU..... ?!?!

Anybody other suggestions?

If you download and install the app 'SystemPanel' you can observe which applications are hitting the CPU and as such taking the larger slice of the battery.
I use it daily to end applications that get themselves into a loop.

I use that default thingie as widget on first page when you install FROYO to see if appz are stuck in a loop.

I allways finish them off and have no trouble with drain.

With moderate use my battery lasts for two working days. After two days i have to put it on charge overnight.

Have no problem what so ever =)

I'm getting a "servers are misbehaving" message on the second link.

The first link was a flawed test, read the comments.

Heck I before I read the comments I raised a red flag with how much whites were being used and that they used a Droid 2 which had tons of battery problems at launch.

There's a little truth in that first link (Amoleds burn more battery especially on whites) but the test was still flawed... :)

In my experience with Android (Milestone/Desire/Galaxy S) when the battery drains fast usually I turn the phone off and charge it completely full with the phone off.

It seems to charge completely full and lasts longer. I don't do this every day, just on days where it had a bad charge the night before with the phone on while charging. Give it a try... :)

That's not SystemPanelLite by any chance, is it?
I did not bother with SystemPanel Lite, it was too restrictive. I went straight for the full version.

The full version has:-
No ads.
Adds App Manager (installer/uninstaller with multi-version APK archival).
Long-term application resource monitor to solve App-related battery life problems.

galley sensor is always running even if you've used it for ten secs, the sensor will run in the background. guys have a go. have the gallery opened for a minute, flick through some photos, quit gallery and at the end of the day have a look at the sensor usage.....it's very frustrating...

Simple answer, just use either the 'Program Monitor' widget or install SystemPanel like I mention above and stop it from running.

tbh a serious bug like that, we shouldn't need to settle for 3rd for things like this.
Whilst I feel for you, it's only a bug when it effects everyone.
It does not happen to me (yes I have checked) and I daresay it's not happened to a lot of others as well. Only those that notice it or have it will complain. I don't see the issue surfacing in any bulletin's, blog's or in general census records.
Even if it were a bug we would hardly get it fixed in the immediate future. As such a short term measure of terminating the App seems the likely answer.

Galaxy S horrible battery performance reason: I had approximately 12 hours battery life and %20 battery drain in one night with the phone staying completely idle while 3 of my friends had 3-4 days with a single charge. With a lot of tests and searching it turns to be that there is wifi sleep policy bug in some firmwares / csc's that prevents wifi from sleeping even when the wifi is completely turned of. The interesting thing is that sleep policy runs normal for a while and after some time passes it begins the buggy behaviour. It doesn't matter what you choose as sleep policy or if wifi is off completely. The only important thing is that have you ever turned wifi on until the last startup. If you wanna try it; turn your wifi off shutdown the phone and restart again and don't turn your wifi on. When I did this at night it lost only 3% in 9 hours and after a full charge I used the phone for 2 days and 12 hours the battery was%34

Hello,
I realy could use some help regarding my little problem i've experienced recently.
I am a galaxy s I9000 owner (stock android 2.1 update 1), and decided to try the new android 2.2 froyo.
I've upgraded my phone via samsung kies (easier for me because i'm not familiary with rooting and hacking phones). The upgrade is great, flash player 10, some new apps, but have a little problem ... not expected something like this ... my battery is dropping down verry fast ... it barely lasted 1 day (before upgrade it lasted ~ 2 days) moderate usage.
I started to uninstall apps, no result, i evan did a factoy reset, still no result, it seems like android 2.2 or some background apps are realy suckin up my battery and don't know why and how to restore my power like it was before.
Ther are no active applicatons in program monitor, but in ram manager there are from 180mb to 216mb / 304mb,
Please help...

Why are you guys so strange? Don't any of you charge your phones when you were sleeping, and unplug them when you are awake?

Like many of you, I've upgraded my SGS to Froyo. And ever since this upgrade the battery discharging happened quicker than usual.

Like Levent I began to suspect the Wifi and tried fiddling with wifi sleep policy. But got nowhere with this.

Then I purchased and installed SystemPanel as suggested by Beards. After some hours the Email background-task began to emerge as the most cpu-hogging process.

In my email-application I had configured 2 exchange-accounts. One which fetched mails every 15 minutes and the other was configured with push mails. I changed both accounts to an hourly frequency. This change did it. Battery life was prolonged after this.

Hope some of you can use this tip.

More Froyo hell here. Since i installed the official Froyo update on my Galaxy S the battery is going flat really quickly. Ive done all the things listed to improve it except the battery recal but still going flat presto. The CPU usage never seems to go below about 10% on SystemPanel, mainly from 'System' (3.5%) and 'System Processes' (3%). Email also takes about 2% even though its not open! THe Froyo update was supposed to improve battery performance! - joke! Any more ideas, I need a phone that keeps going for a whole day at least!! One thought, if the battery needs recalibrating will the phone switch off before the battery is actually flat?
