Root A few questions about rooting if you could help :-)

Hello everyone,

I am considering rooting my Desire in order to flash a custom ROM. I have rooted it before using unrevoked but did not flash another ROM - just kept it how it on stock (just wanted to be able to Screenshot and explore root directory).
But I started getting some bugs and so ran a stock RUU to refresh my phone.
But now I am considering flashing a ROM - particularly one of the cool Desire HD/Z ROMs.
Now I understand the process of rooting and how to stick on a custom rom, but as I understand it - I need to partition my SD card. And this is where I need help.
How exactly do you do this? I am on Mac OS X and am technically quite apt but not a massive tech expert.
Could someone please provide me with some good instructions on doing this? I also find all the partition terminology quite confusing - EXT3,4 and so on.

I would really appreciate some help as these ROMs look awesome.

Thank you very much!

If you look in my apps2sd+ FAQ (signature below), there is a step by step guide to using gparted.

Thanks a lot SUroot. That looks excellent - I have read our rooting FAQ but somehow failed to realize you have the other FAQ thread, sorry!
Does GParted work in Mac OS X by the way?
And also - the first step of using GParted tells you to boot into recovery. How exactly do I do this? And do the options (mount as SD, charge only etc) still pop up as normal in recovery mode?

Well Gparted is a bootable CD (or USB if you desire) so it runs Gparted instead of OSx. It should work, yes.

Boot into recovery is turn off desire, hold vol down and press power. Use vol to highlight recovery and power to select it. Normal trackball use from here on in. No pop up menus. This is in the rooting FAQ ;)

Thanks for your help guys.
Sorry to be a pain though, but I have another quick question.
Does Apps2D run automatically? If I were to flash the insertcoin ROM for example, and not partition my SD would it work? Or are all apps automatically sent to the SD? Obviously I would like Apps2SD but I also quite want new sense - but I have no blank CDs to burn GParted at the mo but really wana try sticking one of the Desire HD roms on.

Thanks

You can flash with usb too. If you use Insertcoin, like me, use 1.8h!!

You can put Gparted on a USB memory stick? I'd been considering doing Gparted, when I get my new SD card, but I use my netbook (with no disk drive) as my backup computer... also I have no CDs. If I could pop it on a memory stick, that'd be a life saver.

Sorry if I'm being a bit slow - I can flash what with USB?
And would it matter if I put the ROM on having not partitioned my SD?
Yeh - I think I read a post by yourself somewhere else saying 1.8h is the best as 1.9 isn't as stable?

Thanks
Sorry, I'm a bit delirious due to a cold! :(

I meant you can use Gparted from a usb key and don't have to burn a cd.

Don't be impatient, do your setup right the first time (app2sd) it's worth it! ;)

It runs automatically if you have the partition. If you do not have a partition, some a2sd roms will not boot.

Thats great, thank you very much for the help guys.
I have yet another question for Lector

How exactly do I get GParted running from my USB stick? I have never really run anything like this before so not exactly sure how to get it running.

Also just to confirm my steps for rooting - I know they are in SUroot's FAQ but would just like to clarify:

1: Root using Unrevoked
2: Partition my SD Card using GParted
3: Stick my ROM onto my SD card
4: Boot into recovery
5: Wipe data
6: Install .zip from SD card
7. Select reboot now.

My phone is debranded using a goldcard, however the SD in my phone at the mo is not my Goldcard. Is it best to set up my SD card in the phone as a goldcard before rooting. Or should rooting overwrite the branding? If it goes wrong I can simply run an RUU of stock with my other goldcard cant I?

Thanks again for all your help guys, and sorry about all the questions!

Thanks a lot guys, you two have been a great help. If you ever have any questions about medicine let me know (I'm a medical student!).
I have managed to get a blank disc off my housemate and have burned GParted. I will give it all a go tomorrow night and see how it goes. I really hope it works and I can get the ROM working.
Lector, is it a really good ROM then? Does the camera and everything else work? Is the battery life any better? I ideally want my ROM to work as perfect as possible as I rely on my phone entirely for my course!
