Android 2.2+ - are we likely to get full camera/video functionality?

After getting the 435 update, rooting and pruning out all of the crap on my X10i, it is actually a pretty good phone. Removing Timescape and face recognition has now given me 36 hours or so of moderate usage in terms of battery life.

However, I am eyeing Android 2.2 and higher enviously.

But, as one of the best features of the X10i is the camera/video capability, how likely is it that the current inability of Froyo and Gingerbread ROMs to handle the carema will be addressed?

I know the guys over at XDA developers have done some excellent work, but I'd really like a fully functioning camera before I'd go Froyo or better.

Am I likely to be waiting?

Cheers,
A

Cheers guys,
my main consideration here is that now that I can see that the X10i is actually a pretty good device when config'ed properly, I would look at holding on to it for a while. Hence, the speed boost available for 2.2+ is very attractive in the longer term, but not at the expense of camera and video capability.

I have every confidence in the XDA Dev chappies, they have done remarkable work already. I reckon I'll sit tight and keep watching the skies! Or at least the XDA Dev forum. :)

i noticed that every rom released on xda...99% of it works except the camera / video camera.

I was wondering what was the difficulty was in getting them to work???

I really like using the camera so sticking with stock at the minute until a fully functional ROM is released....well until the main parts of the phone are working eg gps, bt, camera etc etc

skyfire browser lets you visit flashsites on stock 2.1 x10 software jus to let you know
i think a select few dont work, but every one i have tried has worked so far
and in relation to ur apparent envy for 2.2, the only difference in the 2 roms that i can see are the beta 2.2s arent 100% functional all the time, not all the components work, but they get higher benchmark scores
but the 2.1 works perfectly well if you tune it properly, and whats the best part about the stock 2.1?
EVERYTHING works, ALL THE TIME

Diddy, does skyfire work on the bbc and itv catch up sites?

It never used too on 1.6 and it never worked on vimeo.com either. My X10 is still in bits so can't check myself, why can't SE just open the freaking boot loader to us and let us have fully working phones?

@ dibberly, if you want to have a pop at cracking the boot loader and getting 2.2 working then be our guest :)

why would i want to do that??

i am happy with stock 2.1, but i just cant see the sense in releasing different roms with the same problem???

whats the point in having a phone that does not work properly??

i really cant see the point in having 1 rom for some stuff and another for the rest

but hey ho...maybe i just like i phone that works as it should!!

I couldn't get either to work on my Xperia. But I also tried on my DHD and it works for iPlayer (which you probably already know) but when I changed the UAString to desktop, I could also use ITV Player, flawlessly. Which I found strange because ITV Player uses Microsoft Silverlight, not flash, unless they changed it

EDIT: Just did a google search and ITV player has used Flash since 2009, which I was unaware about. I'm a bit gutted now, because I thought I'd be able to watch Sky Player lol

So, for people using 2.2+, what camera apps have been used in the absence of camera functionality?

Are any good enough to go without the SE stuff?

Cheers,
A

From what I've seen, they've either used MIUI camera or the stock Android camera (Vignette shows up from time to time too). Video Illusions is used for the camcorder, from what I've seen.

The camera apps seem to be ok though they seem to have limited functionality compared to SE's camera app but they do allow you to use your camera on the 2.2 ROMs so it's definitely better than nothing.

If you want to use your stock SE camera, I would keep a 2.1 backup kicking around through xRecovery. It takes a few minutes to restore back to it. I have multiple backups of different ROMs right now so I can switch between them when I want.

For instance, I have a 2.1 backup, FreeX10 Beta 4 backup, then backups for mods on Beta 4, WolfBreak's CM6.1.3 ROM backup, then backups for mods or updated versions of it. So I can switch easily between those.

Cheers mate, that's useful.

Yeah, I quite like the 6MP wide screen format for the pics in the SE camera app, so I reckon I'll stick with that for a while.

With the Snapdragon optimised JIT on 2.1, I don't think I'm losing too much in the way of performance over 2.2 just yet.

Plus, I am playing with a Nexus S at the moment too and TBH, the camera on it as absolute pants compared to the x10i.
