Swapping stock 8GB SD for a 16GB

I've looked on these forums and searched Google and I'm having a hard time finding step-by-step instructions for swapping the factory 8GB microSD card for a new class 6 16GB card.

I have a lot of music and photos on my current card, but it seems like there are a lot of program files stored there, too. I know I need to back up my media files and move them to the new card, just wondering what my process should be in order to ensure as smooth a transition as possible.

There's HTC's Eris manual instructions which basically say "pull out old. Put in new. Ug." Then there's instructions like this: How To: Switch to a Different MicroSD Card on Android (When Using Swap, Hero and/or Apps2SD) | The Unlockr

... and everything in between. You guys that post here seem to be the most knowledgeable in matters such as this so I'm hoping someone can set me on the right path!

Any help would appreciated.

just copy over your media files (pictures, music, etc) on a new card and put the new card in.
Thats of course if you have a back of your contacts and dont care about texts/mms.

If you dont have a back up, use MyBackup and it will back up yyour contacts and mms. Do not back up apps.

wait...why not just copy the entire contents of your 8gb card on a folder on your pc desktop then copy them to the 16gb card.

that sounds perfectly logical do me, I just didn't know if any kind of links would be broken in that process. I'm a novice Mac user and I'm looking at it sorta how I've gathered my itunes library works. For example, if I move my library from my desktop to an external drive by opening the folders and dragging it over, then setting my preferences to read my library from my external drive, itunes still has broken all those links and they all need to be redirected.

Just making sure this won't work like that, because that's a pain.

it wont affect your app settings because they are stored on the phone

As others have said, just literally make a "clone" of the old card. The phone just looks for a path designation that isn't dependent on the size of the SD card so it will be none the wiser.

One thing to make sure to do is TURN ON hidden and system files when viewing the card from Windows. There are 3-4 hidden folders (on my card) that you won't see nor will they copy unless they're visible.

That's what I did when I went to a 16gb card, it worked just fine. It also gives you a backup of the data on your card. Two backups if you count the original 8gb card. Naturally the reason you're going to a 16gb card is because you want more space, so I presume you'll be adding stuff and these backups will become obsolete. But at least you'll have point in time saved, should you need it for some reason or another.

Going class 6 is rumored to speed up the phone TREMENDOUSLY anyway.

The stock microSD cards are mostly class 2 (like mine). I've seen my friend's with a class 6 and, literally, EVERYTHING you do in the phone, speeds up. It's the write speed. 6 is three times faster. Makes a huge difference.

I'm debating getting class 6 8gb or class 6 16gb right now. Bigger is better but $18 for an 8gb on amazon and $65 for the 16. Worth it? I'm not sure.

The verdict is in:

I got my RiData 16GB class 6 microSD Card I found on Froogle for $45.99 including shipping.

I unmounted my 8gb, inserted the 16gb, again did an 'Unmount', and 'Format SD Card' to make sure things would be fresh. Moved my data over from my laptop via drag/drop.

WOW

This card makes almost everything in the phone 10-50% faster. Everything from how fast the Home screen shows up, to how fast Handcent conversations open, to how fast LOLCats loads, is much much much faster.

It is ESPECIALLY noticable when loading 'Albums'. That 8 second wait before your photos start showing up is now, literally 3-4 seconds. Scrolling between them is fantastically faster. Even taking pictures, you notice much less time between the picture being taken, and the ability to move onto the next one. Deleting them as well, the time is cut in half.

I got the 16GB because I will certainly load most of my music onto this card.

I must at least HIGHLY recommend that anyone concerned with the speed of their Eris get an 8GB class 6 microSD card (usually available for $18-20, if you look on Amazon.com or Froogle.com or Newegg.com).

This is fantastic. I am much more excited to show off my phone to others now. I hope this helps anyone looking to speed up their eris!
