Success - Turn 4G off and keep it off!

Well, sad to report cejay's solution is more than likely just a fluke. Nothing force closes on my device when done as suggested. the only odd thing that happened was trying to place a phone call in lte only mode, the phone app stayed "on" even after the call ended, effectively blocking the data connection. Of course, killing it from the task manager(strangely it was listed as com.android.hidddenmenu) resumed everything back to normal, i.e lte only mode.
As far as battery life is concerned, with cdma only mode, theoretical discharging curves put the life expectancy at slightly more than two days with no to lite usage, and over a day with moderate usage, including texting.
That's definitely more than even the lte functionality test toggle can give. :)

This one fix has made me stop regretting the purchase of my phone. I really felt pretty shafted previously, given changing batteries and charging is NOT always an option. Now like you said Tiede, it lasts well over a day even with usage! It's a night & day difference. It's really infuriating Samsung hasn't put out an LTE Toggle icon for this thing yet. I'm literally going to have to root my phone when the toggle comes out JUST to be able to use LTE without a full reboot.

Oh well, in the meantime I'm totally happy having a fun that works and can engage 4G if I want to hit some internet heavy apps!

To give some credit to cejay, it's not totally worth it to reboot the phone. While the force closes may or may not happen, somehow the phone still manages to switch between cdma only and global mode if you keep "hinting" at it. In other words, make the phone 'realize' it should be in those modes... Of course, you can also not act like me and be patient and wait for it to switch on it's own... ;)

So in the end, we don't even need to reboot!!!

using CDMA only Mode yesterday was the first day that I have ever been able to go to work and made it home in the afternoon without needing to swap in a spare battery or charging the device.

and thats with a 36 minute call when normally I dont make many calls

Are you saying that when you used the old method for disabling LTE mode, you still couldn't make it home without needing to swap a battery?

i can use it to kill all data connection... not sure if i wanna do that all the time... haha

could just use airplane mode to kill all data.

There are a few other 4G toggle apps in the market and they all do the same as that one. Also none of them are toggles, so I don't get the name. There just trying to make some cash off of all the people looking for a 4G toggle

I tried this app after reading about it here. I am able to consistently disable/enable my 4g using this app. The set preferred network is:
wcdma preferred. I go to menu and disable the data connection and then turn the radio off (first screen) then turn radio on and the 4g is disable but all other phone functions are working. My battery shows 8 % used in 3 1/2 hours with a 2 ten minutes callin between.
By going to the menu and enable data connection my 4G comes back with no problem.

yeah but 4G will jump back on after a call or at random time. Its not turning the 4G radio Off its just telling it to switch to cdma for right now.

same as the anycut shortcut to LTE test.

Call the number once and the call log will remember it. Then you can just hit **5 and it will show up in the top window. Click that and the menu pops up :)

Edit: A better way I found was to make a contact with the first name as Z, last name "LTE toggle" and the phone number as **583385##
Then when you goto dialer just hit **5 and it will show your contact and you can click it

I was using this to keep 4G off because coverage is marginal at my house and it was killing the battery. I have wifi at home and work anyway.

In my case, MMS messages cant be downloaded when using **583385## to turn off 4g. Couldn't figure out why I kept getting pictures I couldn't see. Switched back to 4g and was able to download them with no problem.
