Hands on with the EVO 3D

I found this over at android central, I woudn't call it an excellent right up but at least it gives a better feel for the device.

My EVO 3D review - Android Forums

Probably best to mention his complaint that the 3D switch didn't change the screen.

Correct.

2D/3D viewing is invoked automagically depending upon your source material.

The 2D/3D switch is strictly for the camera.

Yeah, unfortunately he seem to be a little clueless on some of the issues he was having......kinda embarrassing.

So we can't choose to have the 3D disabled for normal 2D viewing? That might get hard on the eyes.

Normal viewing is ALWAYS gonna be in 2D. If there is specific 3D media then it will automatically switch to 3D but if its standard media it will always be in 2D. The 3D option is what it is, OPTIONAL. So if you don't want to ever use 3D then watch 3D specific media and leave the camera on 2D. Remember the 2D/3D toggle is for the camera only, thats it.

In my opinion they should have just called it the EVO 2 and had the 3D as a exciting new feature. I must admit I dislike the 3D stuff. It'll be a great phone but I'll never have the 3D turned on.

I really wish they hadn't included the 3D slider; Especially now that I know it's used just for the camera alone.

Not trying to be negative. Just my thoughts.

some people are still just not getting it.

And that's ok and to be expected.

Look at the location of the AC poster that wrote the review - Overland Park, KS - ummm - home of Sprint headquarters. (read: Even corporate types that get hands on aren't clear on this one yet.)

With all the hype that was on every blog and forum about how the screen would work - with the simple details being lost in the noise - I'm rather to expecting this confusion to continue for some time.

And that's what we're all here for - to clarify for each other whenever possible. ;)

Maybe somebuddy will make a website, like the one asks if the LHC has destroyed the world yet - with only a big, bold NO in the middle of the page - for: doesThe3dSwitchControlAnythingButTheCamera.com. :)

Until then - we might consider collectively starting a true facts for future sticky reference.

What's obvious to some is obscure to others - just the way it is.

I think its safe to say that the general population could care less about 3D in general even though it does add to a great theater experience but for the home its just way to costly and no where near enough content to even come close to justifying that cost. Personally, I could care less about 3D as well but I honeslty think that the evo 3D is an excellent trojan horse to get 3D to the general population at minimal cost. Gimmick or not, I can assure you that every single person that buys an evo 3D will try viewing 3D media at least once and that in itself will do so much more for the 3D industry than we can imagine, IMO.

I agree 100%. Everyone that buys one will use it at least once, no matter what they might say here. I really think where it will be the best is on games, both on the phone and at home. With more and more xbox and PS3 games having 3D content, I really think that it will be a driving force in the adoption in home much more than movies and tv, and I think that mobile games will start showing up much more often with 3D in tow once the 3D phones start hitting.

While we might not know of any right now, does anyone out there seriously think that there isn't more 3D phones coming just around the corner? It's kinda like the Echo was a joke, but then comes Sony with the S2 tablet that is essentially the same thing and who knows if anyone else is working on one behind the scenes. I do know that devs might not want to rework stuff for one device, but with 2 or 3, especially if they are released globally like the S2 will be, more will jump on board and it will be the same with 3D.

I started out railing against it, and even I've admitted I'll give it a go - and if I'm not a reactionary anti-3D curmudgeon, I'll do until one comes along.

So: aside from there are no absolutes with people (one e.g., not everyone has working depth perception), pretty much agree. ;)

Just my .02, but calling it EVO 3D will probably attract more folks than calling it EVO 2. The casual consumer and the mindless masses that were attracted to the Iphone will hear or see 3D and that eyebrow may raise. That same consumer would hear Evo 2 and just imagine another phone in the market and no curiosity would be sparked.

You play the devil's advocate role extremely well in all of these threads :p

That is especially true with how Apple didn't change much between versions until the 4 and how Moto just barely bumps specs between the Droid and Droid 2 and the DX and DX2

I read through the comments on that page. There are some people who purchased the Nexus S hating on the EVO 3D. I'm sorry, but a lot of people who have the same phone are more likely to interact with each other. "Hey, is that the EVO 3D you have? Why, yes. I have one too....etc." I bet people are going to return the Nexus S for the EVO 3D. When I'm traveling people always ask me about my EVO.

On what other phone can you play an animated wallpaper game on the phone (Zombies live wallpaper) and listen to music at the same time? Now that's some pimp s$%t right there.

funny in his vid... he was trying to see 3D content with HDMI out to a tv...
and was expecting to see the image in 3D on the TV.

even if the tv was 3D capable...
dont TV 3D require special glasses????

3D HDTVs were commonly available with active-shutter glasses in the latest re-incarnation starting a few years ago.

At the same CES that Samsung showed their first active-shutter-glasses 3D TVs, they also prominently displayed an autostereoscopy (no-glasses) 3DTV, but only two blogs reported it on it, and it was under everyone's radar. (Sammy was showing it as a "future-concept" sort of thing, not for release at that point.)

While all the blogs were screaming that only active glasses could make it happen at that CES and that that's the way it would be for years, an Asia-only TV maker started rolling a passive-glasses model (same polarized glasses you might use in an Imax theater) out the door just months later.

This year, LG is doing a big push with sets that include active glasses and polarized glasses.

I know that laptops and monitors are releasing with autostereoscopy (no glasses) as I write this - I've not kept up with where TVs are standing on that in the US, tho.

Autostereoscopy using the parallax-barrier technique - here's a good enough working model to explain it: imagine we took the polarized glasses off of our noggins and just put them on the TV itself. Then, we make them electronic on the front of the screen so they're always off unless we turn them on.

Your takeaway: so long as the TV (or screen) is 3D-capable using the modern schemes, it will produce any of the modern 3D content, whether needing active glasses, polarized passive glasses, or no glasses.

But there ain't no such thing as a free lunch, so forget putting 3D into a non-3D TV and expecting anything of it.

Hope that makes sense!

I don't give a crap about the '3d' aspect. I just pray they figure something out w/ the battery life because Evo 1 was/is absolutely atrocious.

They're pretty famous for turning on every useless battery-wasting feature to show off the phone.

Usually, configuring the phone for normal use and then rooting to do away with any bloatware that might be in a race condition (erroneously using resources) solves it.

That's not unique to HTC, but they are known for it - and with the larger screen and older, more-power-hungry chips in the Evo, it was worse than usual out-of-the-box.

That's what I've done w/ the Heroc and get about 24-36 hours out of it. I hope that similar results can be achieved w/ the Evo 3D.

Har far would you say the Evo 1 gets after ridding it of sense UI and other bloatware, running Colins Ph batt tweaks (interactive, 60 sec polling, min 176, etc.); 4G off, etc.? More so, how much more efficient will the new dual core Qualcomm chip be?

If you were doing the same functions on a laptop you do on an EVO, how long would your lithium ion battery last? Maybe 2 hours. The EVO can last a little bit longer performing the same functions. Don't really see why people complain. Its like comparing apples to apples.
Longer than 2 hours! My ULV dual core lappy gets 6ish (and non obtrusive battery upgrade can make it 8+)!. Not that I would even loosely compare my intended functionality needs of a smartphone to that of my laptop. Phones need to last far longer. I'm carrying it in my pocket, at all times, away from outlets, with instant access needs when people call, gps, reviews, navi, etc. etc. etc. I have no such requirement of a lappy and chances are when I'm doing heavy lifting with it anyway, I'll be near a laptop.

Under no way shape or form is getting anything less than at least full work day of moderate use w/ a mobile acceptable, imho. Anything less, and the eye candy and bedazzlement is merely a inadequate compromise.

BTW, totally not complaining. That would come when/if I'm dumb enough to purchase a device that doesn't meet my needs (i.e. battery life > 3D or 4G). I'll wait to hear feedback from the community here and elsewhere. If it's as sub par as I understand the Evo to be, I won't bother to upgrade to it.
