Help Wi fi won't turn off on xperia x10

My Xperia X10 has been suffering from poor battery life for a while, and I've got an inkling of what the problem may be. Every few minutes I get a circular "refresh" type symbol at the top right of the screen, which I am led to believe is the wi-fi searching for a network. I never use wi fi on this phone but am struggling to disable it. I go to "Settings" and "Wi-fi settings" and turn it off, then within the hour it turns itself back on.

Is there a way of turning the damn feature off and making it stay that way until I decide otherwise ???? Thanks

As Bullitt say, this is the google mail and calendar synch icon. I suspect one of your downloaded apps is turning the wifi on, as with my X10 when I turn it off it does stay off! Finding out which one may be tricky, but you can start from market place, go into "my apps" and see if there are any network-based ones that may be doing this, eg a diagnostic utility.

On the "Accounts & Sync" page, Background data and Auto sync are unchecked. I have three accounts, all of which say "Sync is OFF". I have checked "My Apps" from the marketplace, I have loads downloaded but cannot see an easy way to tell which one(s) might be overruling the wi-fi setting.

I guess the next thing to do is to check what services are running on your handset.

Go to Settings > Applications > Running Services and list what's running. Use the grey bar as the heading and then list all the services. I'm no expert but someone might be able to see what the issue is.

Good suggestion.

If he still thinks it might be the WiFi...add a Power Control Widget where you can turn WiFi, Data, GPS, Screen Brightness on or off.

Like Bullitt said...check running services....or download an app like Task Manager that will do the same thing, but I find it a little easier to look at.
