Root Help please Stuck in Downloading mode

I am new to flashing. I was following instructions to flash the new gingerbread to my Galaxy S and put it on Download mode. The next step was connecting the phone to the computer and Odin was supposed to recognize the COM port the phone was connected to. But Odin does not. The phone is stuck in the Download mode and is not connected to Odin. Now the phone is connected to a power charger and Odin is open in my computer. What do I do??? Please help me not to brick my phone.

Press the power button on your phone and hold it until the phone exits download mode.


Then, if it boots correctly, kill all instances of Kies on your PC (Ctrl+Shift+Esc and kill everything with the word Kies in it), put the phone back in download mode and try to connect it again.

If you don't have Kies on your PC, you also do not have any drivers for your phone, so...
