Root That's it! Time to root. PLEASE help!!!

So, recently the APP store and Google Maps both decided to update automatically. And instantly took my memory down to 7MB available!!!
You have got to be kidding me!

I constantly clear data, having to relog into facebook,etc...
I even unistalled updates to Maps and the APP store.
Even now, I'm sitting at 21.3MB

I'm scared to death to Root, but I feel I have no other choice.

Can someone, please show (tell) a NOVICE the best/easiest way to root my Ally? I don't want to brick it, because even if I upgrade within the year, I want my wife to be able to use it.

I'm running 2.2.2, kernel version 2.6.32.9, build FRG83G, SW Version VS740ZVE

Also, I am Mac computer based at home, but have access to a PC if needed.

Quick disclaimer...
1. I understand the risks involved.
2. I have never rooted ANY phone and would need directions a 6yo might comprehend (i.e., step by step). While I am Tech savy, my root savy is nill.

I'm guessing I would like a custom rom as well, but again, I have no idea what if anything is best.

People here suggest the root guide....
I see no problem for casual users using a one click root.

Download gingerbreak.apk (google it), install and run it. Once you are rooted, download rom manager, flash the alternate recovery. Download velocity 1.1 from here, reboot into recovery and flash the rom from the flash menu.
And you might want to back up your apps with titanium backup

But you should probably use the guide and check out the irc for expert help

And as soon as you get Velocity on your phone, open the Velocity Toolkit (it's an app), open the terminal, type in "velocity" and let it update the scripts. I think you need to do it twice to get everything. This fixes broken apps and removes the update notification (I think they added the app fix to it, if not, there is a thread where you can download the fix)

I suggest the guide because it is not hard unless you cannot follow directions and it will give you fastboot access in case you were to brick your phone. Shortcuts might be easier but the hard way will prepare you for something that might happen. you only have to follow the guide once.

What he said, use this then take all the updates (dial *#*#checkin#*#* to sstart the update download) then root with gingerbreak and use GNM's all in one recovery thread . . . Link coming soon) to flash a amonra recovery, then download and flash velocity 1.1 (if you want a custom ROM) i would suggest it. It makes up for many of the hardwares short comings and with fastboot (you got it by using LGNPST) its damn hard to brick it.
