Root A N00b trying to get Rooted

Hi Guys

Can I just ask a couple of quick questions on this thread too. Been toying for a while with rooting and am almost there. This thread has been great and have read the FAQ's through a number of times. Just a couple of things that answers on this thread and others have thrown up.

I assume that I lose all the apps I have downloaded already - other than the paid ones? Is this right?

Also, what happens about updates for apps? Do these just happen in the normal way or should you just stick with whichever version you first download?

Lastly, I have looked at lots of ROMS but I don't seem to be able to find screenshots of most of them. Am thinking of going down the MIUI route but would like to see CM7 and LeeDroid but can't seem to find them. Also, I am on 2.2 now, if I went down the CM7 route would I still need to flash a new radio? This is the bit that scares me!

Thanks guys! And thanks wyvilledog for being brave enough to post this.

Rooting itself doesn't lose anything but the data wipe required when flashing a new Rom is. You can backup apps with titanium though so they can be restored.

Sms, call log, contacts best to use my backup pro. If you just need sms, sms backup+ is great. Backs sms to your.gmail which also means you can read them on a pc.

Cm7 looks like any aosp, vanilla, sense less Rom.

You probably won't need a new radio, unless you're on 2.1 possibly.

Hi, I’m back!

Have been busy the last few weeks getting used to my new ROM. Just a couple of questions (as always), since using the new ROM, every now and then I keep getting “too many deletations” for my calendar (gmail) and it asks me to either delete them or undelete them or cancel. Neither option seems to fix the problem completely. I have found that if I cancel and go into calendar for a couple of minutes, it seems to solve the problem. Is there are reason for why this keeps happening?

Also, anyone recommend a calendar app (to be able to use with gmail) as I don’t like the one on the Redux ROM.

Talking of gmail, on the stock ROM, you could set the phone to sync with your e-mail after every so often, there doesn’t seem to be that option on this ROM? Or is it in a different menu now?

And finally, and this is a big one, as I have mentioned once else where, I am using MyPhoneExplorer program. At the moment I am using it via USB but the problem is that it means my phone is constantly charging (probably won’t do my battery any good). Therefore I would like to connect using Bluetooth like I did with my old phone (Sony Ericsson K700i). Still can’t get Bluetooth to connect to my PC using a serial port connection or a secure connection. The main problem is I don’t have ActiveSync on my phone? Not sure what this is exactly but that’s the message I get told if I try and use a serial port connection. Anyone got any ideas or information on how Bluetooth works on these phones? I was under the impression that Gingerbread was supposed to have better Bluetooth accessibility? One of the reasons why I want to get Gingerbread.

Thanks in advanced!

Any help would be a help

I bought Pure Grid Calendar, whilst a tad expensive for a widget, it does what I want and it was money well spent. I would recommend it if you don't like the ROM calendar widget. I doff my hat to SUrouter (;)) for the heads up.

I swear that I could set the timer for gmail on my stock ROM, hence why I was looking for it. It was annoying because you didn't know when you got the e-mail as such as it wasn't instant. But I have noticed that I get instant e-mail now which is brilliant and even better that its done by push so doesn

Hi, can you help me out, I have brought new 16Gb Micro SD card to replace my current 4Gb one for my phone. What I would like to know is what is the best way to go about copying absolutely everything from my existing card, to my new card? I have AS2D and stuff like that, I'm presuming my PC won't pick up these files?

Or am I just being a complete n00b?

The computer won't see the ext partition, so what you need to do is:

* make a nandroid backup.

* copy everything on the fat partition to your computer. Make sure you get hidden files and directories too (things whose filenames start with".", like .android_secure).

* partition the new card

* copy everything onto it

* with the new card in the phone, boot into recovery and restore the nandroid

Your PC can't see the ext partition, but that is backed-up in the nandroid (which is on the fat partition), and restoring the nandroid fills the new card's ext partition. Simples!

I'm sure this is in one of the guides too.

Hi, thanks for the SD card help, did it, easy as pie. As long as you follow the instructions.

This is slightly off topic but you guys are so helpful and I can't seem to find out on the internet but what I would like to know is, does a tablet use more data (3G), than a mobile phone?

The reason I ask this is I have recently brought a tablet with built in SIM card holder (3G) and got a data only SIM card (12Gb for 12 months for

Hi, really could do with some help. I had used 0Mb data, I then used Dolphin Mini browser (same one that I use on my phone) and I have only looked at a few pages of websites (including this one) and I have already used 5.64Mb of data! Wtf? This is extremely high! I have worked out that for a 1Gb usage for a month, I have about 33Mb a day to use and considering I only have 500Mb allowance on my phone and only just use that up per month, I don't see why this is going OTT. Any ideas on this? I have tried looking around the settings but couldn't see anything to change.

Thanks in advanced!! :)

Edit : I have just purchased Watchdog Pro and I can now see that the default browser on the tab uses slightly more data to view the same website compared to the Dolphin Mini browser. It took over 1Mb to view a page of a website. So either its something to do with the tab settings or I am doomed! I can't seem to find any information on Google about this "problem". Help!

hey all, sorry to piggyback on a n00b forum.

I've followed the ultimate updated guide several times, including checking out the video. I've used Hboot and installed the right driver (confirmed) but every time I try using unrEVOked (which I dled from the website, most uptodate version) I get an error message saying that my device "speedy" is not supported at this time.
I'm using a brand new HTC Desire
Android 2.2
Baseband 1.08.00.0429
Build 1.24.591.1
Software 1.24.591.1
WebKit 3.1

I've tried several times, restarting everything, tried using the custom recovery-image and the regular one. debugging is enabled, etc.
Please help!
