I've yet to buy myself an s2 and from what I've read in the manual you can turn wifi on and off - I don't have access to wifi anywhere I am so this would always be off. Does this mean tho that there is still always an internet connection be it gsm or 3g depending on the strength of connection or can that be turned off also? I'll want to save battery life by only having an internet connection when I need it. On the htc desire on the wireless settings page along with the option to select the network mode there was also an option to connect or disconnect the mobile network but I can't see this in the s2 manual. Whenever I've looked at a handset in a shop it never has a sim card in it for me to test this out. Does anyone know the answer to this?

Just press the power key, swipe the screen saver to the side, long press the power key again and a screen saying "phone options" comes up. This gives 4 options; Silent Mode, Data Network Mode, Flight Mode & Power Off.
Just click the Data network mode and it activates/deactivates data. This makes a huge battery saving if you don't need data on all the time while on battery power.

I have a limited amount of '3g' data - I want to use it, but not all the time in the background... Conversely - I want it to automatically connect and use wifi when available

Is there a way of setting it to ask for 3g, but always use wifi? (and then automatically sync when connected to wifi?)

I Highly recomend juice defender as that has the possibilities to do that as well as others and boosting battery life
