Hello, I recently got a Samsung Galaxy S II and am wondering how to update to the latest version of the Android.

In the settings it says: "Android Version 2.3.6" "Build Number GINGERBREAD.UVKL1"

Im pretty sure the latest Android version is 4.0.1, correct me if im wrong.

How do I update to this 4.0 version?
I figured i'd just click "Software update" in the settings, but when I do it says "No firmware"

Help me out please, thanks!

In order to update to a newer version of Android, your manufacturer or a third party would have to release a firmware update specifically for your model phone. Anything from a third party would require your phone to be rooted.

Theoretically you could do it yourself, if you had all the necessary development tools, but it's not like installing a Windows upgrade.

If no update is out, then your only option is custom ROMs which may be full of bugs, instability, and crashing. Personally upgrading is not really necessary. Every app seems to have compatibility with versions as far back as Cupcake. The only changes are mostly UI aesthetics and the addition of Google Now. I now use a Samsung Galaxy Precedent which only runs Froyo and will never get an upgrade. But it works with all my apps, is stable, and runs well. All of my troubles with Android were likely due to my itch to root and mess around with every device i had. Believe me, having the latest and greatest is not worth it, especially if it means messing with buggy custom ROMs. It is just not worth it for the user who just needs their device to work and work well

I believe Samsung has released ICS for some Galaxy S2s. What is the exact model of S2 have you got, was it supplied and customised by your carrier, what country are you in, are you in the country where you purchased it?

How do I update to this 4.0 version?
I figured i'd just click "Software update" in the settings, but when I do it says "No firmware"

However it might not always be available via Software Update or KIES, depending on the exact model of S2, the country you're in, carriers, etc.

Help me out please, thanks!

There might be unofficial ways of upgrading your S2 to ICS from GB, but it would involve using a third party non-Samsung ROM. How competant are you with rooting, downloading and installing custom ROMs with all that implies, etc.?

I am not very clear with how to update my firmware and reading the posts here I really feel like an idiot because it is all greek to me. I am about ready to pull my hair out. Can someone please tell me in terms I can understand how to fix my stupid cell. about 2 weeks ago it got damp and I thought it was working fine. Then about a week ago when i turned it on some little weird cartoon looking thing was on it with somekind of a message showing a list of saying to check for sd update, reboot system touch update and a couple others. now the volume has a mind of its own. i will turn it down and it will go up all by itself along with the media volume and it fights me when i try to turn it down. help
