OK...just finished rooting my phone. So now I don't know what to do next. I know what I *want* to do, but not sure how to do it.
I want to install SetCPU since that seems to be the program everyone uses to overclock. Problem is, that one is on the market, but some of the other apps people have mentioned aren't. I need to look, but what apps do you recommend to monitor cpu temp? I know I shouldn't need it if I keep it below 1Ghz but I still want it anyway.
What ROM should I use? I know a lot of people are recommending BB (whatever the latest version is) but I have seriously no idea how to install these things. johngalt was impressed with AllDroid 03.b but again, I have zero...ZERO idea how I install these apps when it involves downloading from somebody's website. Can anyone provide some tips on the best route to go from here?

You need to read a bit more.

SetCPU is used to set the OC - but you need a kernel that supports OCing your CPU first before you get anything.

Temp Monitor is pretty much the way to go....

All the ROMs at AD have pretty detailed instructions on what to do to install.

Here is a good list of the most accepted ROMs....

AllDroid - View forum - Droid

In addition, there is the DroidMod site with their ROM *and* their one stop app for installing everything needed for their (and others') ROMs.

DroidMod - Everything Droid doesn't, DroidMod does.

Yeah, there is a lot of information out there and MANY different roms to try to find your personal favorite(s). Bugless Beast is a good default if you want something to start with. I have only good things to say about the 2.1 build version 0.5 (Bugless is available in 2.0.1 and 2.1...2.1 just has a few more features but they are basically the same look, feel, and functionality).

Are you familiar with recovery yet? If not...get acquainted with it because you will be using it a lot to backup and restore various roms. If you stick with one rom...there will be updates that give you extra features and you will want to update...this requires performing an update using recovery.

kinda sad seeing as though i dont have a credit card and everybody suggests getting setCpu first.

i hope these ROMs will be OK for me without overclocking

Why don't your install Ultimate 3.7 or Bugless Beast...maybe they include SetCPU...maybe you could even save that .apk for future use in other roms that don't include it ;)

Just have to give a shoutout to all the regular posters on this forum as well as one of the most influential and helpful site I found in learning how to root, overclock, and ROM my Droid...
YouTube - DroidReview's Channel
He also has his vids embedded on AllDroid...
http://alldroid.org/viewtopic.php?f=222&t=2249&start=0
Reading how to do it is one thing, but I seriously could not have done anything beyond rooting without watching those vids.
Any noobs like me would stand to gain a great deal from checking these links out as well as scouring the forum here.
Thanks!

Don't tell me you've been scouring all this time?!?! I wouldn't be surprised because I did the same. LOL. Those are all great resources. I'm glad you found them.

headbanger51,

Thanks a ton for the link. I caught one of vtothez's video's on youtube as I was researching rooting. I watched several videos and thought his was the best.

That link to all of his video's is awesome. He walked me through the whole process, great instructions. I am a noob and considered rooting but really would not have spent too much time researching on how to do it.

Now I am running Smoked Glass v4.5 and overclocking at 1100MHz and loving it.

Damn I sound like I know what I am talking about, when I really don't know much, lol.

how to put in diag mode. I did update.zip and now I have NInja icon. so rooting is done. cant figure out how to put in diag mode to change prl on the phone

What are you trying to do here? I just don't understand why you need to change the prl (Preferred Roaming List...right?). I'm not sure that I can help you but I see it is unanswered to this point and I don't know if anyone understands the question...
