Ok so I have a Tmobile Sensation 4g on the official ICS update and I need help rooting it and installing a custom rom. I was used to the one click root method with gingerbread which was nice and easy. But the ICS method is really confusing me. Can somebody please tell me how to root the device in lamen terms and step by step. I would really appreciate it :D

That seems way to complicating. I may just stay stock.

it looks like alot of directions, but if you do things slow,be careful not to miss steps, and organize any files you need before hand and the process honestly isnt too bad once you get started.

we certainly dont want to push you into something youre not comfortable with. feel free to post up any questions you have, and we will do our best to explain them :)

Ok ive tired like 4 different roms and I keep getting stuck on the image for the rom after the bootloader. I don't know what I'm doing wrong?!?!

the process you linked is basically using a tool to unlock via htcdev, install recovery, and flash superuser files(steps 1,2,3 from this post of the other thread i linked above).

the reason i strongly recomended to follow suit with becoming s-off is the same reason that you are haivng trouble.

htcdev unlock does not allow recovery to write to the boot partition. what that means in simple terms,is that you cannot flash roms from a permantly installed recovery becasue they will not install the kernel.

hopefully this link will help you understand why s-off is better, and how you can flash roms if you want to stay s-on: http://androidforums.com/rezound-all-things-root/587430-s-want-flash-roms-read.html

once you have understood everything in the link, you basically have 3 choices if you wish to flash roms:

1)reinstall your stock rom and root files, then run the s-off tool. s-off rom flashing is much simpler
or
2)you must launch recovery into phone memory from fastboot every time you want to install a rom
or
3)if you wish to install roms from a permantly installed recovery youll need to learn how to extract the boot image from your downloaded rom and manually flash it

since options 2 and 3 both reqire a PC in order to work,#2 is the easiest of those 2 options.

#3 is the only option that will let you download roms right to your phone and flash them without a PC in sight.

last and not least, the result on the TB thread was similar, but the prollem itself is different. in your case, its a well known issue with htcdev.

hope that helps clear up some confusion. :) holler if you have questions.

if youre happy, then were happy. :)

i dont have nearly enuff info on what happened to comment on it. just remember if you wnat to flash roms with s-on you can, youll just need to fastboot boot your recovery so that it can properly install the kernel.

nothing wrong with staying stock, but if you do id advise you to keep the stock recovery on the phone in case future OTAs try and sneek in. the stock recovery can install them, but your custom recovery cannot, and the the results can be anything from a fixable bootloop to a non-recoverable phone.

Yes very.

According to somebody at XDA the phone went into deep sleep mode.

And explain this fastboot process for me.

Can't I install a rom with the same firmware etc and it would boot?
the firmware is not important,as long as its ICS firmware. what is important is the boot image, wich is where the kernel lives.

IF you flash a rom from your permanent recovery that uses the same kernel, then it should boot. you will have to determine that this is the case however,or youll be left with an unbooting phone. make sure you have a nandroid backup of what you have before flashing anything.

yes that will work,if you prefer to do it that way. IMO its alot easier to just fastboot boot your recovery,as you then do not need to extract the boot image from the rom. just launch recovery, flash the rom normally.

I'm just going to ask this in this thread. With the Tmous version of ARHD my data speeds suck. So I hear I can flash a radio? How do I go about doing that and can I do it with s-on?

Also I want to overclock my device. What kernal can I use that is 3.32 and that I can use while being s-on? I tried the bricked kernal over at xda but it killed my wifi and I couldn't over clock it.
