Root Complete Newbie's Guide to rooting and flashing Evo V 4G ROMs/Kernels using fastboot

Hmm. The error makes it sound like adb doesn't exist in the directory the command is being typed in. Is it possible that it got extracted in a slightly different location? I'm not trying to say you didn't follow directions, that's just what the error sounds like. Are you on Windows 7? If so, browse to the folder that contains adb and fastboot. Hold shift and right click that folder and hit open command Window here. That should open it in the right directory. :/

Thanks for all your help but I just got the update and the only reason I wanted to root was to force the update but thanks anyway and I'll probably end up rooting later on when I get bored with the phone lol

once i try adb reboot bootloader in step 4 i get
*daemon not running. starting it now on port 5037 *
ADB server didn't ACK
* failed to start daemon *
error: cannot connect to daemon
I just got my phone yesterday and as soon as i got the phone it had a software update I'm not sure if that helps at all but I have no idea what I'm doing wrong i followed the other steps correctly.

Edit: I am also on Windows 8

I followed the guide word for word extracted it exactly how it says and typed cd c:\sdk-tools that works but once I type adb reboot bootloader I get the same error could it be a problem with the drivers for the phone?

Make sure you dont have a sub-folder of sdk-tools inside the C:\sdk-tools folder. Windows 7 did that to me. Move the files from the sdk-tools subfolder into the main sdk-tools and it should work.

I followed these instructions and everything works well. I'd like to s-off too, but that mentions I need to do the RUU flash to gain s-off. Even though I'm rooted and unlocked bootloader and new ROM from this thread, I still need the RUU overwrite for s-off to work?

Yes you need to be stock. It's not a big deal though. Just make a nandroid backup in recovery. Then run the Ruu. Then after everything is finished you can restore your nandroid backup and be exactly where you left off!

Help, the cmd says that "'adb' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file". What can I do about it?

That means you aren't running command prompt from the proper directory. You need to change directories to wherever your adb and fastboot are. If you are in Windows 7 you can hold shift and right click the folder they are in and select open command Window here. Otherwise you have to type it in command prompt. For example mine are in a folder called sdk-tools and that folder is in C:

So I would type after opening command prompt:
cd c:\sdk-tools

Cd is the command to change directories. Then my command prompt would display C:\sdk-tools>
Which means that's the directory you are entering the commands in.

So because I'm on windows 8 I can't root my phone?

I'm pretty sure I've read that people have had problems with Windows 8 from a few different people . I've not tried it myself. :/ would you be able to try on a Windows 7 machine? Maybe a friend or family member to see if you have different results? Are you positive all the drivers are installed properly and working? And have you made sure programs like htc sync, iTunes, anti virus aren't running?

Um hi i am trying to REunlock my evo but whenever i send/Flash the unlock token it just sits at 0kb forever anything i can do? HBOOT ver. 1.57

Try going into recovery and clear the cache first. Then what you have to do is go back into fastboot (adb reboot bootloader). Then enter command: fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin. Make sure you have all your files in the right places.

can i use this method to root other htc phones?
Works fine on the Evo 3D. :D

Any other HTC phone that can have it's bootloader unlocked via the htcdev process and is supported by the JuopunutBear wire trick for S-OFF should be able to use pretty much the same procedure, but the utility and contact points will be different by phone. The rooting process should be pretty much the same once the bootloader is unlocked, but some recoveries may not be available on all phones.

Newer HTC phones like the Evo 4G LTE use other methods to gain S-OFF, so you should go to the unlimited.io website to find out which ones are currently supported by JuopunutBear.

This is a great guide, and I have rooted my phone.

I am using the stock rom (DEOX??) and an update keeps popping up from sprint (or virgin) .zip has a long name but has .652 in the title and when I let it install, it reboots back to the bootloader and shows error messages in update, so when I chose zip file to flash (the update file .zip) it installs it successfully and reboots, but then the phone acts like it not installed keeps telling me I have an update and once again its the .652 file 14.65mb (file looks like OTA_Shooter_ICS_35_sprint 1.14.652.0 etc

DO I need to wipe both caches before flashing this update or will that mess things up, and do I only wipe both caches if I want to change roms and just flash update zips

also what is the best way to do backups when changing roms that will still have all my info intact (such as expense programs) will the nanorom thing do the trick or what program for this phone should I be using so I can get all my data back the easiest

What is the signifigance of flashing the ODEX stock ROM from this step:

3) The stock ROM. Grab the ODEX version for as near to stock experience as possible.

Why can't I leave the ROM alone, and stock? Also, what is meant by "as near to stock"?

If you are on the stock rom that's fine, you can continue from there. :D
