Help Heat and battery issues on Note 2?

I finally made the switch to the Note 2 yesterday. Love this thing.

However...

It basically does not hold a charge and it gets so hot it's uncomfortable to even hold it.

As for battery charge: I put it on the charger last night. Took it off this morning with 100% charge. Used it *very* sparingly and by 1:30 this afternoon it was down close to 50%. I charged it again, got it back up to around 88% before I needed to leave with the phone.

I then used it very sparingly again and now, just 6 hours later the phone is down to 5% battery left.

This can't be typical, can it?

Also, the charging process seems to take a very long time.

While all of this is going on, the phone gets really, really hot.

I took the battery out to check it and the battery itself is not warm at all. It seems the processor itself is causing the heat. I would expect some, but this seems unacceptable.

Far hotter than any phone I have ever used.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Is it possible I've just got a bum unit that I should attempt to get replaced?

Any insight would be fantastic.

Thanks!

I had the same problem with my Note 1 after rooting it. Mine over-heated and had severe battery loss (100% to 20% in an hour). I never did find the cause but I know it did not happen prior to me rooting the device. The other thing I noticed is that the heating/battery loss happened when I charged the device through my computer's USB port and unplugging it with "dismounting or removing device" through the task bar tray. I think using the block charger and cable resulted in much less problems.

Almost every review I have read people have stated this phone gets better battery life than their previous phone and runs cooler too. This is my experience too. Amazing performance.
You got a problem somewhere. Take it back asap, one day old they should just give you a new one. That's what I would demand at least.

Bought the phone from my local AT&T store. (NYC)

I'm going to take it back in Monday morning and get it replaced, there is clearly something not right here.

I just went out for a while, charged it up to 27% before I went out. That was all the time I had to charge it. I turned on 'power save' mode and had no apps running at all.

2 hours later the phone completely died due to no power left.

Thanks for the input. Now let's hope that AT&T makes it right.

Forgot to add, the device is not rooted. Totally stock.

Sounds to me like there maybe an app that's constantly running.
I've downloaded quite a few apps that have refresh settings constantly updating. I usually try to go into the settings of each app and change them to something more practical, or no syncing at all if I don't use the app much.
Also look into the main Gmail account(s) on your device. I usually find that every sync setting is enabled. I go in and uncheck everything except email, calendar, internet, and contacts.

First I'd check to see if anything is running in the background. Might be an email account or some stock app that's constantly running that you're not aware of. If this is not the case then, yeah, exchange it for a new one. I've had no issues with the battery on mine and it never gets hot even after several hours of use. Sounds like you might have a dud or defective battery.

Yesterday I kept track of the battery levels from the time I took it off the charger until it finally died completely.

Here's the breakdown:

Time: Battery Level:
11:30 AM: Removed from charger - 100%

12:30PM: 90%

1:30PM: 75%

2:30PM: 58%

3:30PM: 42%

4:30PM: 26%

5:30PM: 9%

5:55PM: 1% -> phone died

So, basically, 5 1/2 hours from full charge to completely dead. The last few hours it dropped like a rock.

I turned off all syncing and had the phone in 'power save' mode. Even had wifi turned off.

I checked email maybe 2-3 times during the entire period. No phone calls. 2 Facebook checks.

Very, very little use yet the battery dropped like crazy all day long.

Today it does not seem as bad as it was yesterday or even the day before. It has now been off the charger for 5 hours and it is currently at 39% and I have used it more today than I did the entire day yesterday. It's still bad because the use today is still pretty low. Much less use than a typical day for me.

It seems like a bad unit. I'm hoping that is what it is. I'm heading to the AT&T store after lunch. Hopefully they will swap it for a different unit.

Thanks for all the input and suggestions.

If your replacement phone gets hot/dies fast try this:
1) Create a brand spanking-new Gmail account.
2) Factory data reset the new phone (I'm assuming everything's backed up that you need).
3) Sign into the new phone with only the new (empty) account on it.

The above steps will make sure that nothing's coming in from Google Play (paid apps many times automatically install, for example).

Use the phone for a couple of days and see if it gets hot. If not,
4) add your old Gmail account under accounts and use it to one-by-one test your paid apps a day at a time. Assume nothing--sometimes an app you've been using forever can be the culprit.

Also, be aware that I am experienced only with the Verizon version of the phone. Would be interested to hear from confirmed AT&T users who have the great life/cool performance I'm seeing.

I use AT&T and used my only Gmail account when setting mine up. I have oodles of apps installed and all of them are set to automatically update whenever possible. I have GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth, and Multi Window on all the time. I have about 7-8 email accounts and all of them are set to push or pull once every hour. I've read numerous threads/reports of people having issues with their battery and I'm thankful I'm not one of them. If I tried really hard and shut off a few things, I could probably get mine to last two days without charging. Needless to say, I'm quite pleased with the battery performance on mine. Having come from an iPhone 4, I was a little weary about the battery performance of Android phones but this one seems to be just peachy so far.

Happy to report that the replacement phone seems to be pretty solid.

I took it off the charger at 7:30 this morning, 16 1/2 hours ago, and it still shows 34% batter left.

That is with some pretty solid usage too. Used it non-stop for my 40 minute train ride to work this morning and then again on the way home. Normal usage during the day, email checking and facebook/twitter, etc.

Also heavy usage after the gym tonight for maybe 20 minutes straight.

I'm much, much happier now. Everything seems right in the world again.

I'll update again in a few days with the final say.

Thanks again for all the input and suggestions.

So does that mean your phone wasn't charged for 1 day 17 hours and still have battery life??????? How is that even possible????? My HTC vivid has to be charged every 4 hours :'(
Yep that's right, I usually charge it every night as you don't know what you're going to use it for the next day, but this time I had 30% left after nearly 2 days, not bad but I'm not what you would call a heavy user but moderate throughout the day and more at night.

Quick follow-up on this 1 day later...

Last night when I went to bed, around 1AM the battery was still at 30% left. I put it on the charger and took it off around 7:30 this morning.

By 3:30PM today the battery was down to 15%. Makes no sense to me.

I see the one item that is killing the batter now is Exchange Services.

I have completely removed my Exchange account and even force quit the 'exchange services' app yet it still shows as hogging 72% of my battery.

I'm really liking this phone and loving Android, but these issues that keep popping up are almost pushing me back to iOS. :(

Anyone have thoughts on the exchange services issue? I've read several threads and blog entries but nothing seems to be helping.

Thanks.

Have you tried disabling Exchange Services at Settings / Applications Manager / All ? I don't know the ramifications of doing that but at this stage is there much to lose? Incidentally, that app has no data or cache and is not running on my phone.

Yeah, oddly enough I did that earlier. It no longer shows that it is running. However, the battery usage still shows it there, at 72%.

Perhaps that battery usage is overal, not current? Is that possible?

I feel like this is a deep rabbit hole.

Thanks!

I have always assumed that the data stats are the overall usage. I also seem to recall someone mentioning in this forum that the battery has to be almost fully charged before the data is reset. I have just tried switching off, removing battery for 5 minutes and that did not reset the data so I'll see what charging it overnight does.
