Official EVO Rumors and Speculation thread

Status
Not open for further replies.
Just trying to get a different thought stream going here to pass the time while we wait for some hard new information on the EVO...

I have mentioned before that I am new to Android, but I am an old timer when it come to smartphones and PDAs in general. What I would like to hear about are some specific things that you personally plan to use the EVO for. And if possible highlight EVO specific features that make your thing even better. If you want to use your imagination and dream a little please do, I just ask that you label it "my dream is" so people like me will know the difference.

Reply Rules: I humbly request that we keep the replies clean; I know there are some special things that people can do with dual cameras, but... you know what I'm saying --- --- clean please.

In any case, I know these replies will better help me understand how to make best use of Android and the EVO, and I hope they will help others too.

Note: What makes this different than the applications thread is that I am asking you to explain how the application(s) and the EVO will work together to make your life easier, more fun, etc.

I can reaffirm that the comment in the SDK definitely does not indicate that Froyo will be in the Evo. All this portion of text and code shows it that the constant TYPE_WIMAX has not been implemented.

Let me break it down to hopefully help:

ConnectivityManager cm = (ConnectivityManager) this.getSystemService(Context.CONNECTIVITY_SERVICE);
int networkType = cm.getActiveNetworkInfo().getType();

These first two lines of code set up the Connectivity Manager and sets up a simple variable called networkType. It references getActiveNetworkInfo() to obtain what network type the device is currently on. Then the code afterwards is simply a standard IF clause comparing networkType to TYPE_WIMAX. If implemented, TYPE_WIMAX is simply a constant that's already available in the SDK. But because this is NOT Froyo, the comment simply advises developers to hardcode a value of 6 as the expected networkType for WIMAX.

That's all. Unfortunately nothing interesting to see here. Whether the Evo drops with Froyo is still up for speculation, but this snippet from the SDK does not indicate it will.

So I was curious and wanted to read some of the comments regarding Engadgets leaked Iphone story.

First, its hilarious as people are speculating whether someone actually lost the phone....OR it was delibirately leaked by Apple to draw interest, considering Android has some kickass phones coming out, pretty much Pre-Summer before any new Iphone could be released. Trying to keep the herd from seperating there.....

Second...and its making me even more mad, the people that are calling it Iphone 4G, yet mentioning the EVO "4G" in the same comment....SMH, come on people, think.

What I would like to hear about are some specific things that you personally plan to use the EVO for.

Sounds like this should be in its own topic, but I'll add my 2 cents here and humbly ask that a mod move my post to the new topic if one is created.

1. I've been thinking of putting a drop down DVD player in our SUV for the kiddos to watch movies on. Well, I'm a tech junkie, and a drop down DVD player is old news. The new idea was a custom mount for an iPad. If I went this route, I could use the wifi hotspot on my Evo for iPad online games, and surfing the internet (in addition to having movies for the kids to watch) instead of spending the extra coin on a 3G iPad and paying AT&T for access. Another way the Evo could be used though, is to have a small drop down LCD monitor, and just have the Evo displaying movies on this screen in 720p glory through its HDMI output. I could get a pretty big monitor in the car for less than what a decent drop down DVD player goes for.

2. Watching movies. I have a decent collection of HD movies that I have converted to digital format. I'll be watching these movies on my Evo, as well as have to ability to take a movie or TV show to a friend's house and play it on their HDTV.

3. Wifi hotspot. My wife has an iPhone. Contract not up until next year. I'll just have her connect to my phone for 4G speeds (once we get it later this year).

4. Logmein. I can access my home computer, and actuallly have a screen large enough to see what I'm doing.

Other ideas spring up daily. Can't wait to use this phone to its full potential.

I just recently registered after reading this forum for some time; was waiting for the Samsung Moment to be updated and get that - but now just going to have to wait a little longer to get the Evo!

Huge NFL fan - draft later this week. Ndamukong Suh just on ESPN radio with Mike & Mike in the Morning; he and Sam Bradford will be tweeting/blogging from the draft - promoting Sprint's new NFL Live app ... Suh said he was using the HTC Evo for a time and can't wait until it comes out to get one (video was great, etc.)

I was just listening to ESPN Radio and Suh was on doing an interview and dropped some plugs about the EVO and Sprint!!! It was kind of cool hearing it since I knew what he was talking about.

Fourth-gen iPhone prototype leaks, looks like an EVO 4G copy | Tech Gear News - Betanews

Found this and thought it was pretty funny. I am not bashing Apple, just thought I would bring the article here.

Sorry, lurker here (I live on XDA), but found this article and thought it was interesting. Looks like for sure we'll be going up against the new iPhone. Crap.

AT&T blocks employees vacations in June for iPhone launch Boy Genius Report

EDIT: "Crap." -- I know our phone will be better, faster, hotter, sexier, and pick up WAY more chicks, but we don't have the crazy fan following Apple does. I work in IT, and people will come in and have bought an Apple product over anything because?... It has an apple on the back of it. Like most of us, I want the EVO to be the hottest phone on the market (even though I want to be the cool kid and have the only one, lol) so that we don't go the way of the Pre or Instinct.

Sorry, long rant/post. Keep up the great Evo news!

is anyone else jelous of the fact that verizon is getting the increadible in 10 and we still don't even have a release date.

Not really - it's been common knowledge I guess that the Evo will drop at the beginning of June - the news of the Incredible doesn't make me jealous...just a bit more impatient maybe.

Thanks drexappeal. I tried to get this working like the other videos here, but no such luck. Would you post this in the WiMAX thread if you haven't already. Thanks.

No problem. I lost the forum connection for a second, so just came back now. Anyhow, it looks like the video is being prevented from embedding into other websites (I'm assuming CNN Money blocking that functionality).

I love how you mention "pick up WAY more chicks" as if it was an included feature. By that standard, I can't wait till the first smartphone comes out that can make you a sandwich. That will be truly revolutionary.

Just messing with you, but if we look at it in those terms, an Iphone would pick up the typically hot, but rather dumb drunk girl at the local bar that loves attention, whereas the EVO would pick up the cute, more eloquent and intelligent girl at the library that doesn't care as much about popularity. :p

Hey Bill, sorta off-topic, but congratulations on your "Guide" promotion. Did you get that for posting a lot or basically being a moderator of the EVO threads?

Love that green font color btw.

Thanks. Since I'm the one that started the tread, I've always felt like I should be managing it as well. Look how big this forum has become in just one month! As far as the "guide" thing, it was sorta bestowed upon me. It basically gives me some editing power to help keep the thread clean. That's all.

Engadget has put up their review of the Incredible:

Droid Incredible review -- Engadget

I know this is the EVO forum ;-), but a lot of the info about the usability and performance of the Sense UI on the Incredible should be very encouraging to those of us waiting for the EVO. The Incredible also has the same 8mp back camera, which Engadget was also impressed by.

This is interesting from the review:

Another somewhat major issue that we struggled with on the Incredible (just as we did on the Nexus One) was the awful screen visibility in bright daylight. We had numerous occasions where we simply could not answer a call or take a picture due to the AMOLED display's poor showing outdoors. In overcast settings (such as the one above) it was usually bearable, and If you crank the brightness all the way up on sunnier days you can get some visibility, though once you're outside and can't see the display, that's a bit of a challenge. In all honesty, we love certain aspects of these screens, but we're perplexed as to why HTC continues to use this same display when it's clear the daylight performance is hamstrung.

Wow no thanks verizon, I'll stick with my Evo, I can see the screen outdoors then lol

2. Watching movies. I have a decent collection of HD movies that I have converted to digital format. I'll be watching these movies on my Evo, as well as have to ability to take a movie or TV show to a friend's house and play it on their HDTV.

I was just thinking about this the other day. I currently have a WinMo phone, and have a couple movies on it, but rarely watch them (just in case of extreme boredom). However, I have converted them to 320x240, the screen size, to save space on the storage card. I was thinking with the Evo, i would start converting movies to the screen size, 800x480. But then i remembered about the hdmi output. While we don't yet know if it will support 720p or full 1080p, storing a full movie at either of those resolutions will take up a lot of space. Taking this phone to a friends house and being able to plug in and watch a HD movie will be sweet, but with storage being an issue, I may only put one full length HD movie on it for this purpose, and convert the rest to 800x480.
