Root [International] Custom rom question

I am looking at installing the omega rom on my s4 but I have a question to ask that I can't find the answer to. The rom says that it is compatible for android 4.2.2 which is what I am on (and I have checked my phones compatibility). My question is - do I need to update the normal firmware provided by Samsung when the next firmware is available and than re - install the omega rom built for that firmware when an update is available, or do you just continue to update the omega rom.

I always thought that a custom rom took the place of the stock firmware and therefore you just kept up with the latest release of that rom??? Is this correct

Please explain I am trying to learn and I am reading and watching a lot of clips but it is hard when you are starting out.

Please explain I am trying to learn and I am reading and watching a lot of clips but it is hard when you are starting out.

Personally, I wait for the firmware updates to be incorporated into whatever custom roms I want to use. I learned the hard way not to take updates directly from carrier or manufacturer. Sneaky sobs always seem to be looking to lock bootloader or some other mischief.

A custom ROM effectively replaces everything on your phone except the bootloader. ROMs aren't compatible with a particular version of Android, they ARE a particular version of Android. All you need to know is whether the ROM you want to install is compatible with your phone.

Once you have installed a 3rd party ROM, it is usually not a good idea to apply any more updates from anyone except that ROM developer. So what you said was absolutely correct. Stick with either only stock ROMs or only 3rd party ROMs but don't try to mix the two.

So, once you have installed the Omega ROM, the only updates you should apply would be to keep re-flashing whatever is the latest version of the Omega ROM.

This might be a stupid but do you need to unlock the bootloader to install the custom rom??

The Galaxy S4, International, bootloaders are unlocked unless you are unlucky enough to have updated to one of the latest firmwares mentioned in post #1 of Locked bootloader & Knox security on latest firmwares.
