Help Google Voice as default SMS

I'm having an issue with 4.4.2 and setting Google Voice as the default SMS app. Hangouts always seems to get in the way and resets itself as the default app.

I have tried clearing the default in Hangouts, but it keeps resetting itself as the default.

Any help?

I don't think that Voice can be set as the default (yet, at least).

Prior to 4.4 it was able to be the default. I was able to send a SMS using voice from the people app, or using Google Now. Guess the 4.4 update removed that functionality.

Ah, okay, I see what you're talking about now. With 4.4, I believe they removed (or at least changed) the Intent that Google Voice was previously able to listen for in order to compose a text message from outside the application. With the change to how SMS is handled within the OS, that Intent has disappeared. Hopefully Voice will soon receive an update that will allow it to be registered as the default SMS handler - though I'm not exactly sure how that would work since Voice actually uses data instead of the standard SMS protocol for sending (and receiving) messages.
