With out Android app killer how do I know what apps may be running in the background ?

They are not "Running". They are just loaded into memory and using 0% cpu. They are loaded into memory so that if you access them they will open faster. There is a sticky up there that has LOADS of info about this very topic. My suggestion would be use Astro File Manager if you really need to see them. It has built in tools that will show you apps and processes running. Keep in mind its not windows.

I was thinking like if i open a app and close it will it still be running in the background, I guess coming from the iPhone wich I had with betta 4.0 it would leve the app running in the background and you would have to tap it in the multitadking list to close it so it was not running in the background ?

The last 6 apps may have more running only to allow you to go back to them in an instant. This is part of the multi-tasking feature of Android. They will close when Android needs the resources. Task Killers tend to use more battery because they are looking for apps to close or keeping some indicator running in your task bar. Some of the articles I posted give a lot more detail on how it works. I know the feeling you are having right now. When I first used Android I was killing tasks like there was no tomorrow only to see them open again. For me if you don't want the app running to install it. Otherwise Android is smart enough to handle it. Now its not to say that some third party app won't cause you issues. That is why Astro is good to use because its not running to kill apps but you can still view them and look for apps that are running (using CPU) and make the decision, "Is this app worth it".
