Root Captivate Root

I'm still really unsure about this, i've used a bunch of apps from the market to customize everything. i have a diff. launcher, lockscreen, the list goes on.
i just don't get the whole custom ROMS thing?
i feel stupid but i've only had this thing for about 2 months.
and while i'm happy with my phone, i do feel its lacking,
and can someone tell me this, i run 2.1 update 1. am i permanently bound to that version? or can you update to 2.2 or 2.3?
see. i need help.

I assume you are referring to your firmware being version 2.1 update 1. Version 2.2 is also know as froyo. Version 2.3 is gingerbread. Currently neither 2.2 nor 2.3 has been released by samsung or AT&T for the Captivate. You are not permanently bound to 2.1, but unless you root and flash a custom rom, you do not have any options unless and until at&t releases froyo.

I just did this all from within the phone. its easy, I came from an iPhone too so ill try to help you out.

1. Download Opera Mini to save the update.zip file to your phone.
- The file is on the first post. So use opera mini to hit the download file.
- Opera mini will ask you where to save the file to. The default should be /sdcard so save it to there.

2. Open a program called "My Files" it should be included by default with your phone.

3. Look for the file that was downloaded to /sdcard and rename it by holding down on it. A list will appear and click rename. and name it to "update" there is no need to add the ".zip" because it already knows what kind of file it is. ***

4. Once it has been renamed. Turn off your phone.

5. Hold down both the volume keys and power key as stated in the first post. "(note: let go of the power button after seeing initial boot screen, otherwise it'll continue to power cycle)"

" - Select Reinstall Packages from the recovery menu using Volume Up and Down to navigate, and Power to select

- Phone will automatically reboot, and you will have root privileges, and the Superuser program installed."

hope this helps man. it took me less than 30 secs and it was all done within my captivate ;)

This worked perfectly!! I am now rooted. :)

Thanks for such clear and easy to follow instructions!

Edit: IMO, circazero's POST should be a sticky! These were the easiest instructions I've come across yet.

I'm attempting to root. It's not recognizing the SD card file for some reason.

The error I'm getting is that the file or directory sdcard/update doesn't exist.

Go into My Files, delete your original update.zip and start over and follow the instructions I posted above, seriously, I was rooted in seconds. The longest part was downloading and installing Opera mini (minute or two), but it was well worth it.

***I HOLD NO RESPONSIBILITY OF WHAT YOU DO TO YOUR DEVICE, WHILE THERE IS LITTLE RISK OF BRICK, I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE OTHERWISE***

YOU WILL NOT LOSE ANY SETTINGS OR DATA DOING THIS*

Download the following zip file and rename it to update.zip

Step 1. Connect your phone to your computer and copy the renamed update.zip to the root of your internal memory

Step 2. Turn the phone off after file transfer is complete

Step 3. Hold both Volume Up and Volume Down while powering on the device to enter the recovery menu(note: let go of the power button after seeing initial boot screen, otherwise it'll continue to power cycle)

Step 4. Select Reinstall Packages from the recovery menu using Volume Up and Down to navigate, and Power to select

Step 5. Phone will automatically reboot, and you will have root privileges, and the Superuser program installed.

Alternatively, if you can not get the timing of using the hardware keys to enter recovery mode, you can use the following command to enter it.

Connected to ADB you can type

Code:
adb reboot recovery

into the console to reboot the phone into recovery, alternatively you could also download a terminal emulator on the market and just type

Code:
reboot recovery
EDIT: Made the directions easier to follow :)

Took me two times, but works great. Allows me to use Sirius/ XM while still on 2.1

I am not a real tech person. So when I read that i must download a zip file to the Samsung Captivate root directory, I am immediately lost. What I deduce is that ATT and Samsung do not support the use of Tether (or similar) and that you have developed a work around to make it. However i risk, maybe marginally, turning my phone into a brick. Is this a fair representation of the situation? Just want to know how to find the root and what my possible downside is.

Thanks for your time

The best answer is to root the phone, use titanium backup to create a full app/system data backup (which would be used to restore your phone including system data on the same ROM version) in addition to Clockwork rom manager to create a nandroid backup (you can flash to the ROM version and nandroid restore back to how everything was before trying a new ROM).

Point is, get the phone how you want it, make backups and ensure those backups are copied to a computer. Ensure you understand how to move data/files to and from the phone using the usb cable. Then try a new ROM, make notes how things goes, how stuff restores from titanium backup and of course how to restore your phone using the backup.

In this case it is ATT who configures the Samsung Smartphone for use on their network who setup what can and cannot be done.

Rooting the phone involves using the one click root program (just search for it) which copies an update.zip onto the phone, reboots the phone into recovery mode (you can manually do this using a button combo held during phone startup) and choose to reinstall packages (which is the update.zip). The only problem that happens is the phone complains about the update.zip and fails to install it.

In the event something goes wrong, there are methods to get the phone into a mode whereby you will reinstall the stock system to get the phone working again.

Always make sure you have all your important items on the phone backed up someplace or have a worst case disaster recovery plan before starting.

Ask questions before trying something if unsure!

Hi guys, I've tried the rom cook, but most of them are errors, sometimes crashing, then go back to using the stock 2.2 rom UCJI6, but now I can not root is, how do you know any solution please help, my many thanks.
I am not sure what question is being asked?

How do you root android 2.2 froyo on the captivate would be my guess.

There are many posts online that detail how to root on Froyo on the captivate.
