New to android? any suggestions or tips

Don't go cheap on your phone selection. You will regret it.

This^ the rest is personal preference. I'll rate the manufacturers by smiley face heh -- these are just my preferences.

:) LG: Sorta new to the scene, specs look awesome on paper, reviews a bit mixed as of now.

:D:):( HTC: great about updates, generally good hardware, recently started locking bootloaders, too much skinning with SenseUI

:D:(:( Motorola: Very good build quality/hardware, good about updates to high-end phones, locked bootloaders, too much skinning with motoblur

:):( Sony: Terrible about updates, decent-ish hardware, skins can be fun but hold back the platform. unlocked bootloaders.

:(:):( Samsung: Not good about updates, annoying iPhone copy UI, decent-ish hardware, bad GPS though. unlocked bootloaders.

:thinking::thinking: Asus: don't know enough about them.

:rolleyes::rolleyes: Dell: My god WHY?!?! Don't do it. Life is worth living, just give it a chance.

It's fine to have preference alostpacket but is it really necessary to spread that fud to every user asking for help? If you don't like Samsung or other manufactures then fine but don't spread information which is out of date or just plain incorrect, that has nothing to do with your preference.
