ahhhh yes brent weeks. i read them a while ago....i loved the trilogy......very good indeed.

i just finished the second go around of the sword of truth series and reading the omen machine now.

the first confessor is a great story and kind of cool that he self published it.

I used to like the Pern books, but I sort of petered out. I'll have to start over.

If you're going Gutenberg, don't miss anything by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Edgar Rice Burroughs. Can't go wrong there!

I also recommend the website Books Should be Free http://www.booksshouldbefree.com/http://http://www.booksshouldbefree.com/ . It's the same catalog as Gutenberg or Librivox (public domain only), but it's much easier to navigate, and you can get audiobooks as well as ebooks.

My favorite film adaptations have been LOTR and Harry Potter. For some reason, I really enjoy Starship Troopers, although I think it was a horrible adaptation. I couldn't tell you why I enjoy it.

I can't get started on characters and short stories now. It would take too long. That's for another post.

I love Starship Troopers both book and movie. i think the movie was more of a satire type then anything, it was so cheesy(on purpose) that it made the movie fun.

well then that would make goodkind a very busy author cuz he just finished the next book after the omen machine from what i here(might be a trilogy), but that would be amazing, if there was another one from that time period.

Total forgot about Gemmel. His books were easy reads not the greatest but still a pleasure. Sucks he died I want more of the swords of night and day.

The whole world was awesome. Books were so different from each other, but still connected.

I loved Druss, Skillgannon (that's right, right?)

All of Gemmels work is very easy reading, you can pick any book up and get into plot and the world quickly. My fave would be Waylander, such a strong character. Gemmel was also the first fantasy author i read to put a gay couple in his novel.

ok so i finally finished the sword of truth universe with the omen machine. it was pretty good.......not quite near the actual series, but very easy to read. i'm curious to see what the next book will be like.

now i'm sick and was going thru some things in my room when i came across David Brin's Uplift Series. i have read only the first three books and i need to get the rest of the series.

i guess i know what i will do, since i'm sick....lol

i mention david brin's uplift series a few posts ago.

also any of the robot series from asimov would be good reads as well.

Additionally, C.S. Friedman's In Conquest Born is an epic sci-fi book and The Madness Season is another of my favorites.

In fact, I may pick up the latter for another read soon...

So, I finally ventured into some of the non-android sections of the forum.

I love reading, mostly Fantasy, but some Sci-Fi as well. There have been some great authors and series mentioned already: Martin, Jordan, Rothfuss, Brust, Feist, Tolkien, Butcher, Banks, Eddings, Gemmel....

I recommend Joe Abercrombie's The First Law series, Scott Lynch's The Gentlemen Bastards series, Guy Gavirel Kay's stuff (almost all of it), Neil Gaiman's stuff (all of it), and Matt Stover's Caine novels.

I think the 3 series that are an immediate buy for me are:
Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire
Butcher's Dresden Files
Rothfuss' The Kingkiller Chronicles

I'm currently working on reading some of the classic SciFi staples that I have somehow never gotten around to reading. I just finished Asimov's Foundation and am working on Foundation and Empire.

Abercrombie is a different author than Peter Brett (I haven't read the Painted Man, yet).

The First Law series is Abercrombie's take on the traditional fantasy trilogy, with a twist. I read a decent amount of fantasy and for most of book 1 I found it ok, but the last few chapters hooked me and I'm glad I picked up the rest of the trilogy. But what really shines are his 3 standalone books, which all take place after the trilogy. They are incredible. Book 1 of the trilogy is called The Blade Itself.

Abercrombie is a tough, gritty writer...think David Gemmel meets Clint Eastwood's Man With No Name characters.

Nightmare. Put out books slowly, seemed to have the idea that this series was going to go on forever.

Added so many characters and plot twists I literally couldn't keep up with them, much less care. Then he died.

I refuse to go back and read them and try to figure out what is up with them again.

dustwun77, I completely understand about not wanting to reread the earlier books just so you can pick up some of the later and still know what is going on.

If you are interested, there is a great website called The Encyclopaedia Wheel of Time:

It has summaries of all the books and extensive cross references to characters, places, items, etc. It's a great way to catch up on old books, or if you want to jump into the newer books, quickly reference certain bits of information.
