Upgrade to 5.1 or stay at 4.4.4?

I used wugfresh to restore my 7 back to 4.4.4 wiping absolutely everything possible. then used OTA to update to 5.0.2 then 5.1, then did a factory reset

It's now working really well - as responsive as it ever was

I have, however, installed my "party" profile / email as that is what I'll be using it for for the next few months, rather than my usual profile. Play Music has downloaded 2 playlists at a total of over 12GB and has streamed flawlessly to my bluetooth system tonight, which is more than it has managed to do recently

Hi Rod,

I was wondering how it's going. Has your speed and reliability dropped off at all?
So far so good - tomorrow is the crunch day where it will be streaming play music via bluetooth for about 12 hours - it couldn't manage 12 minutes last weekend without stopping

Like I said above though, that's all I'm using it for at the moment - no email, facebook, chrome - just music

Yesterday it played faultlessly from about 10:00 until 23:00 and again today from about 11:00 until 19:00

It was on constant mains yesterday, took it off last night and ran it on battery today - still showing over 30%. Hardly any screen-on time.

It isn't as quick responding to touch as my HTC M8 but I don't think it's any worse now than when I bought it 3 years ago. I'm going to try the same on my son's later on in the week - this time I'll go straight for a 5.1.1 flash - I think the trick is, as has been said by many others on here - is to get rid of all traces of any previous installs - I did this by ticking the two boxes (on a different PC so can't say what they were) when I un-locked it I think

Google was in trouble either way regarding this device. They either choose to not update the device because of it's age and get negative press, or they update it even though the latest firmware might be too much for the hardware. Google promises updates for 18 months, while the 2012 Nexus 7 is 36 months old and the Tegra 3 chipset that is uses is already at least 42 months old. Not to mention the Tegra 3 chipsets are plagued with I/O stream and NAND memory issues which is what is likely causing the lag most are seeing.

Quick up-date - It's still shite

Added my standard profile as a second user as just had a week away. Struggles with multi-tasking (switching from one app to another), can't do anything else whilst downloading simple app updates, can't open multi tabs in chrome.

As a book reader it's fine ;)
I was looking all over for a reasonably priced tablet to replace my n7, and almost every one under $250 just doesn't compare to the 2012 N7.

All I want is a reasonably future resistant tablet, from a vendor who will actually update it, without paying Nexus 9 level prices.

I wonder why such Google hate in this thread.

My two year old Nexus 5 has been excellent with 4.4.4 installed as it was released. So Stable and fast I kept it and ordered the Nexus 6 upon its release.

Ver 5.0, now 5.1 runs very well on the N6 so I installed it on my N5. Both continue to be the best of the various flagship Android handsets I've had in recent years.

I'm on 5.1.1 stock atm. Like everybody else my N7 was great and then after 1.5 years it was awful. And like everbody I tried all kinds of fixes. But really, I made the fixing way too complicated. All the factory resets, removing and re-adding accounts, turning off services. Ultimately, those were all wild goose chases and those solutions (at least for me) were totally unnecessary.

About 6 months ago I finally found an adequate solution. And while I'm still not happy about it, I can still use my N7 daily with a lot less pain. Granted not as less pain as when I first bought it but its back to a usable state. All I do now is run Trimmer. Every time there is a hint of lag I just run trimmer. Usually thats about twice a day. I do one scheduled one in the middle of the night and then during the day when I use my N7 I'll trim again. I think the reason why so many had trouble after updating to lollipop is not because of lollipop but because the update took too much space in the drive. clearing cache partition doesn't help but trimming the drive seems to. A few weeks ago I notice performance dropping again but I also noticed that it happened right after I downloaded some large maps file for an offline map app. So I'm sure that extra storage has something to do with it. To me, the true problem which has been reported before is the storage.

I still think there is some issues with the google play service but at least now I can forget about everything else and just trim away until a better tablet comes along. This thing is now over 3 years old so I at least got my money's worth out of it.
