You asked, and here it is. My personal opinion of Star Wars VII.

I thought it SUCKED.

BADLY.

Watching it felt as if Disney took Star Wars and handed it to JJ Abrams, who poured all that great Star Wars stuff we’ve grown up with into a cinematic blender and poured out a concoction that, while pretty on-screen, has no resemblance whatsoever to anything actually Star Wars. I could tell this was a shameless Disney cash grab: instead of being true to the franchise, it turned out a mish-mash smoothie of Star Wars-y crap. If you had shown me the movie without the title and opening crawl, I would refuse to believe that Disney would have the guts to call it a Star Wars movie. The fact that the title and opening crawl are there as Episode VII of a beloved movie series is beyond disappointing… it literally pisses me off.

Oh, there are moments. A few moments. And lots of detail. But that’s its fatal flaw: JJ threw in so much distraction from the actual story that I think he forgot that the story itself is supposed to be the focus. As a result, the whole thing is an endless parade of details and distractions that leads nowhere in a hurry. He claims to be a huge Star Wars fan: you could have fooled me! This movie seems to have been churned out by a die-hard Star Trek fan with a singular mission: destroy Star Wars completely. The extremely disappointing ending was an obvious setup for Episode VIII, which I may or may not see to find out if Disney can redeem itself.

I’m not alone in my sentiments: there were mumblings throughout the theater as we walked out and Donna said that she’d sooner watch a movie about Jar Jar and Ewoks than watch Episode VII again. It’s a given that I will probably NOT be buying the movie when it comes out on Blu-ray.

I’m very disappointed. Disappointed that Disney took my beloved Star Wars and sold it for parts; and that I wasted good money watching it. Yes, Disney made a fortune in box office receipts with it… but they HAD to, because that’s all the money I think they’re going to make with it. I doubt very seriously that merchandising and home video sales will hit their projected lofty targets.

If you still feel you must see it, go right ahead. It’s eye candy for sure. But if you come back to me afterwards telling me you LIKED it? I’ll be quite stunned.

I think this episode accomplished the two most important things, washed the bad taste of I, II, & III out of our mouths, and set a new course and reasonable transition as the characters from IV, V, and VI are old and feeble.
