Help Edit default.prop

Guys.. can you please help me with how to edit default.prop?

Kindly let me know the step by step procedure if any. I am not able to edit the file as it seems to be read only.

My genuine problem is where do i find the free root explorer which will allow me to modify the default.prop file? I did searched on Android market but didn't get one. The explorers which i downloaded display the files but they are read only.

I'm going crazy and getting frustrated as I need to update to 2.1 but i'm unable to.

any idea on what basis upgrade is available? on operator basis or country? though I'm in India, i have xperia thats branded in France

I don't think a free version of RootExplorer exists. You'll have to buy it, but it's very cheap and it lets you edit everything (including the Hosts file).
