Sorry, I had to bring this thread back from the grave to point out that my paranoia was justified after all. I had a good time re-reading all the replies from the optimists who said "BRO IT'S A NEXUS" as if that meant everything would be fine.
Ah, the ol' I told you so. Yeah, I think there were a few of us who had used previous Nexus phones that were a bit "uh, what do you mean they'll have carrier apps on it and you expect the carrier to be left out of the loop on updates?" about this whole thing. Hopefully, this will end the carrier exclusive on Nexus devices. Also, coincidence on the timing of the Play inclusion of devices and this bit of news hitting?

I think he was talking more about the nexus, since he says I'm glad Google is back to selling phones directly after he discussed updates with carriers involved
