could you not, technically, use Easy Root and root 2.1, then flash to a root of 2.2 like Pete's 01B and then a root of 22D. this process would allow you to use Easy Root, no?
or... just use the old school root method OMJ outlines

the method I outlined is new school...just came out for rooting the D2 a week or 2 ago. Flashing back to 2.1 involves a lot more and its more dangerous than the linked method
But 1 click apps will be the way to do this in the future. if we can send a space shuttle into space and beam voices all over the world, a 1 click app should be the root standard strived for. But I digress.. your steps work and are appreciated. I should know, I have had to follow them before
I recently flashed back to 2.0.1 and used Universal AndRoot to re-root a new replacement phone. I did it like this because where I live all I have access to is dial up, and I had the files and programs to do it this way. I thought it was an easy procedure.
just curious has anyone checked out DMUpdater??? i found a page on it that was posted July 31st saying it was for the Droid 1, but i wasnt sure if it was outdated, things change in a months time, and I was wondering if anyone had used it, does it work after all the newest updates? I want to root, but I'm not sure how to, i plan on trying to get it all done today
