Root ROOTING For Dummies

Hmm, odd.

Try going into your Running Applications, force stop ROM Manager.
Uninstall it. Reset your Device then reinstall it and see where that gets you.

I attempted this to no avail. I did find in another thread to attempt this with the wi-fi turned "on". I did so and it worked great. Very strange, I think.

Awesome job Matlock...this rocks! Very easy and just what I needed!

The only thing wierd is I get sporatic "your phone has lost internet connectivity" while streaming pop-up, yet there really isn't any lost connectivity. Odd, but whatever.

Oh yeah...

STICKY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

... coming from the Moment to the EVO (just got it today) and I'm having difficulties getting root.

Although I'm not a guru, I'm a little familiar with the rooting process since I rooted my Moment early on. However, the EVO is a slightly different animal.

Considering I just got this phone today, I'm guessing I have the newer HBoot image on it that won't allow root yet from what I've been reading on other forums .

As for what happens when I'm running the Unrevoked3 software, it gets through the recovery screen where you scroll down to HBoot USB then reboots back up the phone instead of writing the custom recovery. I've confirmed that

Just in case this might help, my phone has the following software version:

Android Version 2.2

Baseband Version:
2.15.00.09.01

Kernel Version:
2.6.32.15-g0673ed
htc-kernel@u18000-Build-149 #10

Build number:
3.30.651.2 CL271968 release-keys

Software number:
3.30.651.2

Browser:
WebKit 3.1

PRI Version:
1.77_003

PRL Version:
60671

Any help you guys can provide would be much appreciated.

Yup you got the new hboot with your evo. As of right now you have 2 options... you can either root by downgrading to android 2.1 and then root or you can wait for unrevoked to release a new version that will play nice with the new hboot.

What keeps the method in this thread from working? I was on 2.2 via an OTA update and was able to root. Is there something that comes with the new Evo that prevents this method from working?

Yes there is. Itis a different bootloader. They are calling it 2. 02. Anyway, they have found a solution but just haven't posted it yet. Look in q&a over at xda.

I am rooted with
Mod Version: CyanogenMod-6.1.0-RC1-Supersonic
but when I flashed the Kernel cm6-snapv7.5 nothing new happening to my phone did I do something wrong? Also cant get anything from teh app market

I just got my EVO today from Best Buy. A lot of my phone info is the same as Flippers, but some is different. If I have to wait a few weeks or something for a new root build, it won't kill me, considering I waited almost 5 months to root my Hero, but it is something I would like to do.

This is what I have:

Android: 2.2

Baseband: 2.15.00.09.01

Kernel: 2.6.32.15-ge2fb08e htc-kernel@and18-2 #11

Build: 3.29.651.5 CL252548 release-keys

Software: 3.29.651.5

Browser: WebKit 3.1

PRI: 1.77_003

PRL: 60671

Which one determines if we will be able to root now, or have to wait? When I activated it, I hit cancel on the firmware update checker, so I'm not sure if that had anything to do with it or not.

No need to wait. You are good to root now with that set up! Its only the software that starts with 3.30. Happy rooting and if you have anyother questions ask away... there tons of people willing to help out!

From what I've been reading, it appears anything with Build 3.30.XXX.XX can not be rooted yet with current methods, although they're close to overcoming that.

Yours is apparently 3.29.XXX.XX so you should be good-to-go. There's a good step-by-step tutorial by Matlock somewhere on this site that explains the steps.

Have fun!

And that is *EXACTLY* where I'm heading now!!! Hopefully it won't be much harder than rooting my Hero, which was fairly painless. If you hear a loud scream, you'll know why. :)

** EDIT -- Yay for starting silly questions early! I've been reading through the first post, and got all the way through the Pre-Rooting section, step 2 before I hit my first question. :) Since I have a "rootable" EVO, do I want to go through the Updating step to update Firmware, Profile, PRL and HTC Software? Or will doing so affect my ability to root?

On to read more, and see if I come up with more questions.

Too funny..

I have to admit, I'm guilty of trying to MULTI-TASK and had SO MANY windows open, that I forgot where that thread was... Just like my car keys, it was right in front of me.

And like most men, I CAN'T multi-task at all (so my wife reminds me) but won't ever admit it ;).

Don't update anything prior. Your phone is up to date besides the software version. If you do update you will get software version 3.30 which can not be rooted with unrevoked. So basically root the phone as it is. :D

When I was done reading it i had to make a double take to make sure I was on the thread I thought I was.. haha good stuff! It happens to us all!

n00b Steve here. Rooted my Evo and flashed Fresh 3.3. Besides having the "loading wheel of death" come up everytime I swipe my screen, I cant upgrade the rom, flash another or do a backup without getting frozen out with the HTC white screen. Removing the battery gets me back to Fresh but thats all.
I'm stuck and would appreciate a helping hand.
Thanks.

Do you mean holding down the power and volume button then toggeling down to recovery? I have done that and get stuck on the white screen of death.

I would just reflash what ever recovery you were using.. if you go over to xda you can grab the files you need.

Ok. I'll try it thanks. BTW, I'm in Los Angeles as well. Damn hot today. I'm in hermosa, must be 85! heard its 98 in the valley. Finally summer is here :)

OK, went through and rooted my phone. YAY!! Now I just need to figure out which ROM to use. I tried doing a search to see which ones are 4G compatible (since I live in the Charlotte area and can actually use it sometimes), but of course the term "4G" is impossible to search because it's too short. So sorry if this has already been answered, I didn't see it in my speed-read scan of this thread.

I was using CyanogenMod on my Hero, and one of the things I loved about it was the ability to set the action buttons at the bottom, as well as use Beautiful Widgets for my clock / weather, and have the home screen rotate when I turn the phone. I'm not what you would consider a "power user" or anything, and am rarely away from a charger, so battery use isn't my main concern. I'm looking for something stable that I would be able to use that will allow me to keep the Sprint Football and NASCAR apps (yes, I'm *THAT* much of a redneck lol), but the rest I really don't need (I use Google Voice for VM and Google Navigation instead of the Sprint one). Oh, the Sprint Zone thing is kinda handy, too, so I can view my account info when not at home, so unless someone's found a better way to do that, that would be preferable to keep. Unlike what seems to be the consensus around here, I'm not looking for Wi-Fi Tether. :)

Off to learn how to install WaveSecure in the root access so it can't be wiped out by a hard reset!! :)
