Root how to install cm6/7 (comprehensive)

It seems that when I origanly flashed cm7 i had the incorect build after asking around a bit (playfulgod & tokenpoke both super friggen awsome) playfulgod sugested that i just install the current build skipping all previous steps having already had all the proper .zips just a wrong build (after a backup of course) it worked great
so dont be afraid to give it a try if you find yourself in the same situation this may be helpfull or not just tryn to help out with what i can

First of all I want to give a HUGE thanks to EVERYONE involved with the CM7 project. After lurking for a while, I finally said WTH and flashed it. I like it so far ... but still new to this. I came from Icarus 1.1 and that was pretty easy. Anyway. just wanted to know something simple.
I have read A LOT of forums...and was wondering, Should I use Advance Task Killer or not? Some say it will hurt phone?
ANYWAY. Again. Thanks to Toke for the great EASY info to install. made it very easy.

atk is useless in practice but nice in theory. your phone automatically kills apps after a certain time or when it needs the ram.

Ok. Thanks for the speedy response! was wondering because right beofre I wrote that, I flashed CM7. Now I know it's a WIP, but I have found even when texting, it is very laggy. something I might have done wrong? Also. Is there a nice/better keyboard for this? With Icarus i ran betterkeyboard8

also lags switching between screens. (ie: going from settings and back)

I believe you can cut the lag if you turn off the screen animations in the settings.

unfortunately any keyboard but android keyboard lags. don't know why.

I run BK n it doesnt seem to lag no more than the android kb does.

I guess really, what I wanna know is, is one better or more stable than the other?

atm cm7 is done until someone else picks it up afaik. it is 2.3 thus runs 2.3 apps it has more tweaks available and is more graphically oriented.

cm 6 is 2.2. it is more performance oriented and a tad stabler. Pip is still working with it although he doesn't use service on the ascend. mms may have hope still but don't expect it for a little while because again, he doesnt use it. you can help with the previously posted bug report links

I am very bias because i am running CM6 but mms and recently found alarm clock does not work on CM6. It is very stable and imo is faster than CM7 but... CM7 is also great. Same mms issue but maps and the camera will slow down the system but is easily fixed by locking the screen. My best opinion for you is to flash both and see which you prefer. I have flashed both but for me CM6 is good for me, but you may have a different outcome.

I have my phone mounted to pc. when i click on CM^ folder to copy, then click on phone...it says write protected.

umm did enable usb storage right? not in settings (tho you may want to check em there too) but when u plug the phone in on the phone.

Did you flash the right gapps? There is a different gapps for cm6.
