Root Overclocking ?? Hmm.?

i thought someone did bench mark tests of a class 6 vs the normal class 2 sd card and he said it was the same and the phone didn't become faster from a class 6 at all. i believe that was before root though.

My feeling has always been that getting a higher class card isn't going to make a huge difference. Yes, it is faster, but not fast enough to really notice, IMO.
You will be disappointed if you go buy a higher SD card only because you want things to run faster on your phone.

Now on the other hand, if you need a bigger SD card, like 16GB, then you might as well get a higher class also. But dont waste your money on a 8GB for speed that you wont get/notice.

Ya, I think the Setcpu widget is making my Eris lag and making launcherpro force close everytime I wake it up.

I also have been having MAJOR lag issues with Launcherpro and Overclock widget (on both FreshROM and Sense-able). I read on XDA that someone else had the same issues, so they removed SetCPU and got rid of the issue.

Though I do wish I could have both overclock and launcherpro, I would prefer launcherpro. So I uninstalled OC widget and haven't had a problem since.

Anyone else had similar issues with launcherpro and OC'ing?

I use LauncherPro and OC just fine. I think the lag issue is only a problem if you use the widget. I use the SetCPU app, but I don't have the widget running.

I posted yesterday with what my settings and profiles are. I also have my main settings set to be activated on boot, as I am pretty comfortable with my settings.

I also explained that I added the charge AC/full with max 528, min 480 because I only charge when I am not actively using the phone, that charging heats the battery, so I wanted not to add stress from overclocking, but if you use your phone while it is plugged in, you can probably ignore that profile.

I have my max set to 604800 rather than 710000 because I am hoping that overclocking less will cause less stress on the CPU, plus 605 MHz seems pretty snappy, but, again, I think that 710 is a pretty safe speed.

What's the ideal failsafe temperature setting for the Eris?

I keep mine set to 43-degrees C...GPS or wi-fi tethering is going to get you pretty close to this, I would imagine.

Here's some interesting temperature-related entries from the Eris user manual (DROID_ERIS_Verizon_English_UM_11_5.pdf):

Operating Temperature Range: 32

Question for someone who has just rooted and knows relatively nothing about this new world :)

I installed a ROM (xtrROM 4) that has inbuilt OC capabilities to 710 or the option to run at stock settings. My question is, should I download SetCPU and change the settings there, would the two systems conflict with each other?

I don't know if using the ROM at 710 means it's at 710 all the time. As I'm concerned about battery life I'd like the ability to underclock while sleeping. I'm assuming that the ROM doesn't do this for me and that SetCPU is the only way to do this.

Does this make any sense?

They would not conflict at all; SetCPU (once you run it, and if you click "set on boot" for each restart) would override the default settings in the ROM. If you have overclocking turned on in xtr, the max setting is 710, the min is 245, so it would be underclocked when the CPU is not busy (such as when the screen is off.)

Your explanation and questions make plenty of sense, Aimy.

With rooting and most importantly, with overclocking your CPU, there are usage issues that need to be taken into consideration; your usage of the device. ;)

If multimedia and heavy phone call use are your habits, as an example, then overclocking beyond the default 710 would be a big noticeable drain on your battery and the benefits you get at the higher speeds would diminish dramatically.

The 710 speed selected by the kernel's developer is becoming known as the very best for our Erises, if a ROM has to be overclocked at all.

The best thing to do, in my opinion, is just run the device with the default settings, no SetCPU, for a few days, using it as you normally use your device.

If things are fine, there you go. :)

If it seems slow to load apps, slow at the keyboard, etc, then perhaps bringing SetCPU into the picture is not a bad idea for you. Go ahead then and gradually move the specs up a bit, say to 729/528 or 729/245, with profiles for sleep at 245/245 or where ever you get the response and battery life you need (test new settings all day before switching again, unless you're seeing heat or force closes, then move the settings down right away). ;)
