They did not charge anything. However after about a week and a half, I receive my phone back. I open the box, and it turns out they did nothing! I called HTC and was ready to lose my mind. They told me they had no idea why nothing was done and they would get back to me. They never did. I am so done with the phone and with HTC. They have some of the worst customer support I have ever seen. I really liked this phone and Sprint, but I can not put up with a device with a major defect like that. Good luck.

That sucks man. The least they could have done is clean the dust out of it before returning. I guess doing it yourself is the only option with these phones. http://androidforums.com/sprint-htc-hero/22036-sprint-htc-hero-disassembly-diy.html

I was about to say might as well just take it apart and clean it...
Seems a much better solution than sending it to the manufacture...

Lets be real, there probably won't be a fix for this UNTIL after they either either come out with an HTC HERO II or another phone...

I'm just thinking on the pratical side as I doubt they will change something to address this issue...

Son of a B this sucks. I called HTC about 3 weeks ago to report the dust problem I am having with my Hero. The HTC rep got all my info and said somone from the escalations team would be calling me soon. The next day another HTC rep called me back and she said she added my file to the "tracker" tool and that they were aware of the problem and that HTC would be calling back when they come up with a resolve. The his been an issue for a while, considering when the first of us began to report on it. What the hell is taking them so long ?

Is this dust issue a large problem? Can you notice the dust when the screen is on, or just when the screen is off? I am weighing my options about getting a Hero or Moment and this going to be a major factor in my decision. Thanks for the help!

Yah this is unfortunately a problem with every HERO out there. Trust me, I know. I went through three Hero's, and actually sent one in to HTC for repair. They sent it back untouched. They have no idea how to fix it and it something that needs to be corrected in the manufacturing process. (Which it has not been yet) If it has not effected your Hero yet, it will. It's such a shame because it is a very cool phone. Good Luck.

While it does seem somewhat common, to say "every" one has it is a bit over the top. My buddy and I both got ours the week after release and neither has dust. Mine with Google, his not. Look at the poll results...

Consider yourself lucky. It will eventually happen to yours. I bet most of the people who took that poll did not really notice it, or it has yet to happen to them. But hey, if you have a dust free hero, more power to you.

Large problem? For me it depends where I use the phone. While mine has quite a bit of dust in the lower 1/4 of the screen it's really not that noticeable unless I'm in some brightly lit area. When Outside in the sun, the dust is so noticeable as to not even being able to read the lower half of the screen because of it. It's shows so brightly on an already hard enough screen to see in bright light as to be unusable. Inside in dimly lit areas, I can't even notice the dust unless I look vary hard for it.

okay so i had the hero once, found the dust particles within 2-3 weeks, returned it, got another one and after about 2 weeks, i see about two or three small little specs towards the bottom. I related to the problem to maybe the silcone case that i got for it, since the case picks up so much lint from my pocket. so when i returned it and got another one, i haven't put the case on. i am waiting for my invisible shield screen protector to come in for it, then ill try to put the case back on to see if it puts more dust underneath it.

has anyone already tried this with an invisible shield?

also, if htc knows about this problem and they are "working to resolve the problem" what does this mean for the people who are already over the 30day return/exchange period? since it is still under the one year warranty of htc, will they replace our phones once they fix this problem?
