Root 2.3 OTA Update w/ Rooted EVO vs an Unrooted Evo

I just recently rooted and am just curious and could be completely wrong... Doesn't Unrevoked Forever solve the not being able to get an OTA problem since you would remain rooted even if you accept an OTA update? If this is true, has anyone tried it and does it actually work? I was thinking about getting UNrevoked Forever just for this reason...

If you are rooted with unrevoked 3.x then I believe it already flashed unrevoked forever. That said, accepting the OTA can screw up your current setup and make your phone unbootable til fixed. You will likely not lose root but no guarantees. Best thing to do is wait the few days(if that) for the rooted versions to come out and flash those.

That was the claim when Unrevoked Forever first came out. But rooting is a cat and mouse game, and sometimes the cat wins, at least for awhile (ie, newer Moto phones are still a pain; you can get a ROM on them but still can't touch the kernel).

Bottom line: I don't have actual stats and facts to support this, but with the help of this forum and XDA, I've rooted several phones for myself and others. Going back to a few Heros, an Eris, an OG Droid, two or three Incs, a couple of Vibrants, and more than a few Evos, in researching various phone specific forums and threads for tips and procedures, I can't think of a single anecdotal instance of someone taking an OTA on a rooted phone without losing root, or worse. I'm pretty certain I've never read a post that said or implied, "Hey guess what! I took the OTA, my phone is still rooted, and better than ever." Most of the time, the devs bail them out, eventually. But why should they even have to? To be blunt, it's a simple concept. If you've rooted your phone, you've already demonstrated that you can follow a series of simple, methodical steps. Just add one more step:
Step [last]. If you enjoy and value the added advantages, abilities, and freedoms to enhance and customize your phone to your own needs and preferences, then from here on in, never accept an OTA. Instead, just wait for the rooted version and all the variants that will inevitably arrive shortly thereafter (if not before).
Maybe (hopefully) that will change with HTC revisiting their bootloader policy. For now, if you take an OTA, don't get mad at Sprint or HTC for killing your root. By accepting an OTA, you are most likely throwing your root away, or possibly worse consequences, and have no one to blame but yourself.

Sorry for the newbie root question in advance.

Where should we UnrEVOked users be looking for the not-OTA update? I did the FroYo manual update also, so I'm not a total fool, just partial.

I like stock HTC Sense (heresy, I know), so I would prefer to stay with the official builds with a little root thrown in for spice.

Cheers

They will post them on XDA and likely the links will be posted here too when they are finished rooting them and ready for flashing. Keep looking here and XDA.

You'll find threads in this forum linking you to the dev thread at XDA. Or you can check directly in the EVO 4G Android Development forum at XDA.

So..For those who are Rooted and installed the official gingerbread update today, did any issues arise? did it break the root( which most likely it will)

For those who are Rooted and have not downloaded the update, will you be downloading it?

Last but not least, what should us Rooted users do? await an offical rooted version of gingerbread or dive into the OTA update and reroot later down the line?

Rooted users should NOT take the OTA. It may not even try to update as the stock recovery has been replaced with a custom recovery with the unrevoked process. A rooted version will be out in a few days for those that want the stock rom. Many are already running versions of 2.3. If you unroot to take the update, there is not telling how long it will be before an exploit for the latest update is found so you may be running stock for a bit before that happens. It is best IMO to wait for the rooted versions to come out.

I just read the flash for dummies, so someone verify I have this correct?

I am rooted and never flashed a ROM

I should install Rom Manager.
Then Downloaded the OTA Rooted imaged for 2.3 once posted to my SD card.
Then choose "INSTALL ROM FROM SD CARD"
I want to make sure I choose:
BACK UP EXISTING ROM & WIPE DATA AND CACHE

Rom Manager should do the rest, correct?

Do I need to worry about Kernals or Radios?

Also, to stay as close to stock, do I want Odexed or DeOdexed?

Thank you so much!

Yeah, I am running a Unrevoked Rooted Evo 4G with the stock sense Rom (although I am running LauncherPro and GOLauncher Home apps and themese). I havent removed any Sprint software.

I tried the OTA Gingerbread update this morning and it downloads it and asks to install and it reboots, goes to the "unpacking screen" and then gives me the Android with the White Triangle and Exclamation mark.

I have to do a battery pull to boot back up.

For those of us that are rooted, do not try to apply the OTA. Just wait for a rooted version of the ROM to appear at XDA or from within ROM Manager (if you use it.), otherwise, you run the risk of borking your install and bricking your phone.

If you hit the warning screen during the OTA install, press the menu key and then the recovery window should appear. You can reboot from there without having to pull the battery.

So in the end, did the OTA take? I'm assuming you lost root because it sounds like you don't have a custom recovery any more.

I had the same thing happen to me. Since we are using a custom recovery and rooted with unrevoked forever, the signature validation fails because the stock recovery is missing AND the security is off. There is a chance, that if you un-root, you can get the install to start, but it will brick your phone because the Stock recovery is missing.

My suggestion would be to NOT use Rom Manager. It is buggy and has been known to cause problems. I would start doing everything manually through recovery. It will get you comfortable with it and if you ever have an issue with your phone not booting, you will know your way around to get it fixed and running again. Kernels will come with the rom and not sure yet if there is a radio update or not. If so, it will need to be flashed separately.

Don't try it just had to wipe and reboot.. so much for taking advice..people are just mean..if if gonna message someone..don't lie..you could of messed me up..and if I posted what was sent to me..I'm sure others too..keep it honest and accurate.

That was the reason I asked. I didn't see anything on XDA yet about a rooted version so I assumed it was stock. Posters need to vet what they are putting up or unknowing rooters will try this stuff and screw up their phones.

To start off, I'm Unrevoked forever on my stock Evo 4g.

I understand that I need to wait for a rooted update.

My question is, when this update comes out, what form will it be in? Update.zip? If so, when I run it, will it wipe my apps and data? I have a titanium backup, but I'd just rather not have anything missing (apps, texts and such). Is this even possible?
