LTE Tiered Data To Begin July 7th

I don't think Sprint will remain inexpensive for long. They have to start turning a profit and if they get the iPhone they will have even more data usage on their network. They've already added a "premium" data charge of $10 per line that is not discountable.

I hope that Verizon does keep us grandfathered. I'm usually right at 2GB per month, and the thought of only going over a tiny bit or constantly having to monitor my usage frustrates me. $40 a month for data is crazy!!

My wife and I have a family plan. I have a smartphone (HTC Incredible) and unlimited data. She has a non smartphone and no data plan. Our contract expires in the spring of next year. She would like to get a smartphone but is not eligible to upgrade at a discount until next January. I was recently notified I was eligible for an early upgrade. If we wait, it sounds like I can keep the unlimited data but she would have to get the tiered data.

However, if I upgrade now (before 7/7), give her my HTC Incredible and have her line switched over to it, she could get the unlimited data and be grandfathered in as it looks like I will be.

Anyone see any holes in this given what we know so far about Verizon's plans?

Don't discount the possibility of getting an early upgrade for your wife. Call and ask. It is possible.

I'm confused? It says exsisting customers can keep there current pricing, even on upgrades? Does that mean I can go out and buy 4G phone in 2-3 months and I'll still only have to pay 29.99? I'm currently stuck on the DX...

I don't mind the DX but I eventually want to upgrade, better processor, etc. Are there any carriers left that have unlimited data?

if you already have a data plan (even if it is on 3G only phone). Do you have to go out and get a 4G phone now? can you just wait until the dual core (or any other 4G phone) is in the market, then switch phone (Since you're willing to pay outright when that new phone comes out)....why waste $300 on the charge now.... in fact, getting the revolution or TB now will be $50 cheaper while waiting on the new 4G phone....if yu have to have 4G now.(for contract or whatever reason)

Supposedly those who get the test phones and that on twitter said you need to have a 4g phone to be grandfathered in. Nobody really knows for sure but I grabbed a charge just to be safe and if the bionic or something else really blows my mind ill sell the charge and get that full retail.

Verizon really needs to watch what they do now that AT&T and T-Mobile have hooked up.They ( AT&T) will have just as good as coverage if not better than Verizon. I have been w/ Verizon since before they were Verizon mainly b/c of the coverage and customer service, but if they do this they might be losing me. I was very disappointed that they took away the new every two promo, but this is down right screwing your customers. If this holds true I thought I would never say this, but hello AT&T.

Well at&t doesnt have unlimited anyway so you get stuck with 2g of data with at&t. Go ahead jump ship let me know how that works out for you when you go over your data every month and wish you would have stuck with verizon and their unlimited data. And the coverage wont be better than verizon you do realize tmobile and at&t doesnt have that great of coverage in rural areas where verizon excels. It isnt just going to magically change when two companies that didnt have that covered before merge lol

From what I read, you need a 4G phone before the 7th to be grandfathered in. My brother is account rep, and he's still holding his breath on this. He says it does sound that way but never trusts what corporate says unless it specifically and literally says it in print.

I think I will pick one up (either Thunderbolt or Charge) at Best Buy; that way I have 30 days to do an exchange instead of 14 days. Maybe a dualcore will come out later in July or first week of August, and I can exchange them.

I've watched my data usage and I go over 2gb routinely...rarely over 4 however. If I came on as a new customer after the 7th I'd be in the 50 dollar tier..and that'd be a complete rip off for me. I mainly download and stream podcasts which I assume takes up about half of my data..but even if I streamed I'm sure it would count for just as much. I'll prob bite the bullet on the Charge and hope VZ doesn't ding me with the 'incompatible plan' excuse the next time I switch phones. I'm buying retail at that and having them upgrade me to 4g automatically, I don't want to be bound to a contract with a company who's practices I don't agree with(this is just their latest anti consumer move). Sprint is always waiting....for now.

And for those who say they don't use over 2gb ...okay I'll give u that much but relying on a manufacturer to make software that consumes less data than the other is a poor excuse.

Hmm lets go through the changes implemented by Verizon this year:

1. Remove NE2 discount
2. Remove 1 year contracts
3. Remove annual upgrades
4. Charge $250 - $300 for new phones (instead of 199)
5. Crackdown on tethering/rooting.
6. Remove unlimited data plans and introduce more expensive tiered plans.
time to buy VZ stock.... They pay pretty goo dividend too!

Yeah - Sprint isn't so hot if you get outside major urban areas much. As much as the pricing makes me unhappy, the only other choice is AT&T. And I know too many people with AT&T who validate that their service sucks hard. At least we'd pay more for service and coverage that will be there.

You what they say when you assume ;) Who says Sprint is bad in rural areas?
I'm a former Sprint customer and as bad as I don't like what Verizon is doing I will not be going back there. Not sure if AT&T or T-Mobile would be worth the switch.

T-mobile is ATT so just remember that. What could be worse with sprint than this ridiculous pricing from Verizon?
My two cents worth, you guys are kidding yourselves if you don't think the other carriers will follow suit. It will only be a matter of time.

With that said, and today's news Current Verizon Customers Won

I blame the iPhone and so do the people working at the Verizon kiosk I visited today. Tethering is also an issue.

I find it insane though that I'll be paying more than my home internet and now I'll be getting a lot less. I haven't signed up yet for Verizon as I've been waiting for one of the newer dual-core phones, preferably an HTC variant.

Now with this the Evo 3D is looking even more tempting even though LTE is so much better than WiMax

Well with everyone who does that free wireless tether as their home internet trying to save money and screw verizon. Now they call foul on verizon doing the tier data plans. So everyone thank the ones who wanted wireless tether for free. They are the main reason for this as to keep the network from being over worked. SO dont blame verizon for trying to bring the bad ones under control.

Hmmm.....I pay Bellsouth a fixed amount each month to have DSL service at my house, which I can then connect 85 computers to if I choose, with no added fees !

Now I'm paying Verizon for internet servive to my phone, whether I surf the net on my phone or my laptop tethered from my phone, the same amount of data is being transfered !

I am paying for an internet connection.............period !

But it looks like Verizon, with all the plan changes are actually trying to drive customers away. I have been on the unlimited plan for over 3 years and if and when Verizon wants to put me on a teired plan , I will leave them . So much for being a loyal Verizon customer for 10 years !

BTW..............text messaging cost phone companys $00.00 to transmit...........so why do they charge you for them !

Business is one thing, price gouging and unrestrained capitalism is another. I'm not a socialist, but you can see the have and the have nots are drifting further apart.

I'm so satisfied that I cancelled my text plan. The mark up is out of control and I won't contribute to it, much as I love texting. If VZW starts to price gouge I am gone. There are alternatives always.

$99.99 gets me the sms, data, and voice. I just leave it at that lol

Don't you know? Big oil has been doing it for ages. :p No difference. I don't agree with it, but I don't really think there is much that can be done about it
