***Official Galaxy Nexus Pre-Release speculation thread**

And if you buy VZW's official "reason" for the delay, and yes I said delay since the phone was supposed to launch in November, then I get your reasoning.

However, many sources that people consider credible have come out and said that the delay is on the corporate side, and not due to issues with the phone. Rather, the reason for the delay seems to have something to due with the timing of the RAZR and ReZound launch. From where I sit, that's screwed up. JMHO.

If proven wrong, I'll be the first to apologize for doubting VZW's good intentions.

Edit: I don't think most rumors have had to do with software bugs. VZW has implied that, but BMX, P3, and others have said otherwise.

I know it's been here before, but after your post, I just couldn't help myself.......... :p

And besides, when was the last time (and when will be the NEXT time), that you can experience an HTC device that GETS GREAT BATTERY LIFE?!?!?! :p :p :p

Brad

Hey my Eris is rocking the battery life. Sitting at 74%, took it off the charger almost 13 hours ago with moderate use (basically checking this forum and Droid Life every 5 seconds).....though I admit, the battery life was sucking until I put Condemned CM 7.1 version 21 on it lol. A small taste of ICS and I'm loving it!!

It's an unfortunate state in the US in terms of mobile technology. Basically, the telecom companies have too much power and influence. Will always be that way.

I remember way back in the day, like in 2002, 2003-ish, we were all happy with our Nokia candybar phones because we were finally able to have polyphonic ringtones and a contact list that could fit 500 names, and the most expensive phones were starting to have VGA cameras. I saw a news report where over in either Japan or South Korea, they had phones that could already do video calling. And they brought up a point that is still valid today...for whatever reason, the US is always the last place where new technology is introduced, be it with mobile devices or otherwise.

Back then I guess it was easier to overlook, because there wasn't a huge community built up for smartphones (then called PDAs or Pocket PCs with phone functionality), and the internet wasn't as prevalent as it is today.
To me it just seems like the US is being held to ransom. On the topic of technology, i know you lot have only recently (in the last few years) have discovered SMS, but over here we have yet to experience 4G. On top of that our Philistine carriers have a data cap of 1GB. I'd day for the first time in a long while the US is ahead of the UK at least in terms of mobile tech.

Very EXCELLENT post!!!! Let me ask a question, though: If all you say is true and correct (and I am not doubting it because it DOES make sense), is it then fair to say that it was really GOOGLE and SAMSUNG who "screwed the pooch" on this launch by announcing it, unveiling it, and TELLING THE WORLD about it back in October in Hong Kong if it was really, truly, a solid 1.5 to 2 MONTHS from being "ready for prime time"??

If that Hong Kong event doesnt happen, then we have a LOT less anger, angst, and bad mojo towards VZW in this thread, don't you think?

I hate when opposing arguments are based on well thought out logic. ;)

There is some blame to go around for all of them, I am quite sure, but Verizon is the only one that sends me a monthly bill, so boo to you Big Red! Give me my damn Nexus! :p

First post I've read in here that is just plain truth. This needs to be stickied and put on a loudspeaker in loop.

Best and most accurate post on this thread. (Besides mine lol)
Crap, your support will automatically discredit my post. ;)

Thanks. Thanks a lot. :D

Seriously though, thanks.

Hey guys, I've been checking in throughout the day but haven't posted (not much for me to post on). But boy, do I have a story for you guys!

I overheard my mom talking to my sister about getting the iPhone 4S (my sister has an iPhone; she's the only one in our family who doesn't have an Android phone!) and I decided to intervene and convince my mom to get the Galaxy Nexus instead. My mom has the DInc and she hasn't been 100% happy with it but she's put up with it for about a year now and she's ready to upgrade. I told her all about the key selling points of the Galaxy Nexus and once I got to the part about voice typing in real time, she was like I'M GETTING THIS PHONE! Now I will have someone to use Android Beam with :)

P.S. I think I should work in a Verizon store ;)

I remember at about the 12k mark we were all predicting when the thread would close. I think 30k was the highest guess :)

Oh, how far we've come!

I remember that! Of course we all thought it would be only a couple weeks after the announcement. And also thought we were going to get all relevant info. So much for that.

On my Razr, with a whole bunch of tasks running in the background (including Google Music, the phandroid App, Tasker, a few widgets, and Touchdown), I have 347mb of RAM in use. My old Droid X with almost nothing active anymore (since it presently has no network access) is running at around 230mb of RAM in use.

Considering how much more I'm asking my Razr to do at the moment I don't see that increase in memory as significant... ;)

Almost 700mb of RAM in use initially on the Rezound? Hmm... either someone installed something that really chews up memory or there has gotta be something not kosher with that particular handset!

Not necessarily and that's possibly pertinent to ICS (that only our UK pals can confirm or deny at present).

Remember Amdahl's Law - precision, storage, and performance will always trade off.

I mentioned earlier, it's not how much ram you use - it's how much you have left over.

The new HTCs set the various set-points for memory sufficiently higher to prevent last-second management swapping and its attendant lagging - but with well over 800 MB to work with, will easily leave more parked in memory before swapping out.

Sense has always been a large software stack - but in the case of Sense 3, I'm finding that the memory use isn't going to the old bloaty things like friendstreams when you don't use them - they seem to be going into more buffer space for underlying services. So a Sense 3 phone with a GB ram (just over 800 MB available for OS and user stuff) will float around 450~720 MB ram used, with over a 100 MB left to spare. Compared to previous generation phones - that's a quarter to a third of all available ram from before.

I've no need of defending Sense here - you like it or hate it.

But I think it's in everyone's best interest to keep an open mind on memory management ideas with the newer batch of dual core phones.

I know this took me some time to adjust to, personally. But in the end it makes perfect sense - do you want 500 MB of free ram, in other words, silicon you paid for laying around doing nothing, or do you want it used efficiently for larger buffer spaces and fewer app hibernation / swap-outs?

With all of the increased features in ICS (read: larger software stack) and the media friendliness of the Nexus, I think these ideas may prove helpful to new owners.

Perhaps not. We were all chomping at the bit when there was no announcement, and then it was postponed due to "steve's death BS". Nerves were frayed, some claiming it was vaporware, etc. The announcement did calm things down, but people have to also look at that and see the history as it happened.

  • Samsung and Google delayed the initial announcement, for what we can only surmise as problems with the software.
  • The announcement was made weeks later, and GSM specs were finalized. No formal LTE specs were given (just nebulous statements like, it's slightly thicker). So obviously from that, the LTE model wasn't fully designed, hence it's release date must be later then the GSM model.
  • Release dates in UK were also not publically announced until very late. This has absolutely nothing to do with Verizon, but even the GSM model was delayed.
  • OTA updates already pushed to fix bugs.
I'm not so sure a lack of announcement would have done anything to calm anything down. I actually think that would have made things worse. But the history above certainly shows that there are bugs being worked on, and the LTE model was going to get manufactured later than the GSM model.

"We" here are all getting worked up over rumors, not anything official. If Verizon misses Dec 31st, I'll be the first one to pick up a pitchfork and torch. That's all they've promised us, and anything else as far as I'm concerned is gravy.

Yes, waiting sucks. I want this phone sooooo bad.

And I postulate: How have they screwed it up?

Back to "screwed up launch". By most rumors, there have been issues with the software. We here would also be the first to crucify Verizon for releasing a product that is incomplete. We'd then all be screaming that they rushed an unfinished product out the door for greed. So it's far more prudent for them to hold back the date.

so it's ok to accept that rumors of problems with the device are legit and not ok to believe rumors that verizon is intentionally stalling the device....got it

And I postulate: How have they screwed it up?

I know the popular opinion is that they are incompetent, inept and only concerned with greed. But the situation is more complex than most people can comprehend. I've been in similar situations, from the inside, and can understand public opinion on the perception that a company has no idea what they are doing.

We'd then all be screaming that they rushed an unfinished product out the door for greed. So it's far more prudent for them to hold back the date.

As for being more forthcoming with information, this is something that I would like.......but absolutely understand why they won't. Suppose they announced a date, then had to backpedal and told us it was because of problems. We'd here be happy. Horray!

But the public relations nightmare would only be starting. Imagine articles on MSNBC and CNN stating that it's held back because of issues. The casual buyer sees that and gets turned off. Now imagine an Apple campain talking with Justin Long crucifing a robot over his inability to get released. Imagine the backlash from other competitors such as blackberry or WinMo lambasting Google for it's inability to release a flagship phone. An ice cream sandwich getting squashed or some such nonsense.

No, as much as we don't like not knowing, Verizon is doing the absolute correct thing here. Keep in mind, that Google and Samsung are also invovled. There is no animosity, not hatred. All companies are working together to get this phone released. All the conspiracy theories are absolute bunk.

I don't believe there is a conspiracy to deprive us of a phone. However I really think Verizon has let the conspiracy theories, bad rumors, and unfavorable employee leaks drive the conversation. They have held that there are technical issues preventing the release, why can't they tell us what they are? It's almost like they just continue to plead the 5th. It's their right, but it still makes everyone think they are guilty.

I'm not sure if this has been posted yet since I am still heavily medicated and laying in my hospital bed

Feel better quick xs301!

You can say it as many times as you want but the non believers will not listen ;)

Kinda like birthers & truthers, eh?

What Droid 4 leak?

They're releasing a damn phone that we just glimpsed not more than 2 weeks ago? Before the SGN??

This is bordering on abuse.

It really is. Surprised nobody's yet filed a class action lawsuit against Verizon for... wait, for what exactly?!

Charging $700 for a piece of techno that cost about $50 to make is only that way so you feel like you are getting a great deal at $300 w/ a 'subsidized' phone.

SGN would be more expensive because of beefier components.

Yeah, they're still making a ridiculous profit though.

R&D is extremely expensive, though.

Here's how it goes:

  1. Company spends $tens or $hundreds of millions developing a ridiculously advanced high-tech product in one of the most competitive and fast-moving markets
  2. Company tries to recoup investment while also satisfying shareholders with good profits
  3. Some products succeed, while others fail and lose $$$ for the company
  4. Whiners complain that the retail price is > 10% more than the cost of the raw materials

So the beginning of December is looking pretty sweet for me...

11/30 - Wifes RAZR comes in (i get her inc)
12/5 - wifes first doc appointment about our baby :)
12/6 - Xbox Live update
12/8 - Gnex supposed to come out

Congrats on baby and good luck. There are few things that hammer home what is truly important in life than the birth of a child. Almost makes me forget about this stupid phone.

Excuse me now as I yell at my son to get off the computer so I can read more posts. :)

Difference is the Dinc thread happened naturally.

This thread has had an eye on the record for weeks now. There should be at least a 10% penalty for the superfluousness of many of the posts here.................

that thread will get crushed if the phone launches in mid december, so it will be a moot point
